In the early times, people used their body parts for measuring things;

but they did not know that getting their height is important to know
whetherthey are healthy or not since there is an ideal height for a
specific age.
Their perception for being healthy is based only on appearance, if
you are thin it means you are unhealthy and if you are fat, then you are
healthy.
Then Adolphe Quetelet came and introduced the use of Quetelet
Index or no most commonly known as BMI. He studied further the
importance and the things that contribute to the BMI. When the BMI
began to exist, it gave knowledge to the people and it let them
become aware and conscious regarding their health condition.
Although Quetelet designed it to describe the average man, his
main concern was defining the characteristics of normal man and
fitting the distribution around the norm.
Nowadays, the Quetelet Index is renamed and modified to be the
Body Mass Index or BMI. It is widely used by professionals, especially
Nutritionists, to help them determine if a patient is obese or healthy at
fault.

Is the Body Mass Index (BMI) important to

our health?

How does Physical Activities affects the

peoples Body Mass Index (BMI)?

How does Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

affects Body Mass Index (BMI)?

In this research, the researchers will discuss al about Body

Mass Index and its classifications. This research will not only
benefit us, the researchers, but also the people who will be able
to read and understand Body Mass Index.
After knowing Body Mass Index, people will start being selfconscious to their health. Body Mass Index is a way to know if
one person is healthy through our height and weight that is right
for our age.
These are the people that will benefit in these assessments:

The Nutrition Students, it is compulsory for the students to

study BMI to help them to determine their patients health
condition and help them be health conscious.

The Nursing Students, as a future nurse, it is also important for

them to gain knowledge about BMI, considering that nurses are
the ones assisting patients in the hospital, and the first to assess
their patients.

The Athletes, they have a specific weight requirement for the

particular sport they are doing.

Nutritionists and Dietitians,

The scope of this research is, and will

only be, focused on the important
aspects of the Body Mass Index (BMI)
which are the height and weight. This
includes the factors that also affect BMI
which are Metabolism, Calories, Basal
Metabolic Rate and Desirable Body
Weight (DBW).

Body Mass Index or BMI It is an index of a persons weight in relation to

height and is determined by dividing the weight (in kilograms) by the
square of the height (in meters).
Metabolism It is the sum total of all the chemical reactions that occur
in the body.
Calorie/s It refers to the amount of energy in foods or expanded in
physical actions.
Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR It is the minimum calorific requirement
needed to sustain life in a resting individual. It can be looked at as being
the amount of energy (measured in calories) expended by the body.
Desirable Body Weight or DBW A weight that is believed to be
maximally healthful for a person, based chiefly on height but modified
by factors such as gender, age, build, and degree of muscular
development.
Type 2 Diabetes Is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high
levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
Obesity It is a medical condition in which excess body fat has
accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on
health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health
problems.

Body Mass Index helps you to determine your body proportion by

the help of your height and weight.
After reading and understanding what Body Mass Index is all about,
we can now say that BMI is very important to our health by means of
BMI, we may know if we are healthy or not. Knowing our BMI is important
because your weight alone doesn't tell the whole story
A physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by
skeletal muscle that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity may
help you to reach your Normal BMI or it will cause you to become
underweight or overweight depending on what activities you did.
Basal metabolic rate also affects our BMI. Basal metabolic rate is
the energy need when the body is at rest and awake. Basal metabolic
rate affects the gender, age, growth, height, temperature and fever
and stress. So, for example, the gender affects your BMR, men have
higher BMR than women because men have more muscle, and the BMR
will affects your BMI because women that has a lesser BMR than men
can have a less energy in doing some work and when you doesnt have
a energy, for example in doing some exercise this may be the reason
why you will be obese.

As a person, we should take care of our

body. Now that knowing about Body Mass
Index, people may start desiring their ideal
body weight.

Physical activity is an important factor

that affects our body. By doing this, we can
burn unwanted calories and fats by
replacing them with muscles.

We should know if our metabolism rate is

fast or slow. By determining this, we can do
exercise that is right for us.

We can recommend the patients to have a

healthy diet plan with proper exercises. Sleep is
also beneficial for our growth. Drinking at least
8 or more glasses a day to help cleanse the
body from unnecessary toxins.
Doing exercises for at least 45 minutes a day
is what a fitness instructor usually advise their
client to avoid unnecessary muscle strains.
Consult a dietitian first to know the right
procedures before you undergo exercises that
might not be appropriate for you.
