DO NOW 4 MINUTES
Mr. E is creating writing kits with pens and pencils for students in VSC Math. He
wants to distribute the pens and pencils evenly in each kit so there are none left
over. If there are 15 pencils and 5 pens, what is the greatest number of kits Mr. E
can make?

How many pencils will be in each kit?

How many pens will be in each kit?

LESSON OVERVIEW
We are getting closer to our next
topic: negative and positive
numbers!
Mr. E is very proud of you all for your
responsibility, effort, and
collaboration with each other! If we
want to be successful in math, we
need to keep doing these three!

We will continue to learn about

factors and multiples.

Todays topic is called Least

Common Multiple

GREATEST COMMON FACTOR

The least common multiple of two whole numbers is the smallest (least) whole number
that is a multiple of both whole numbers.
Mathematicians who have mastered finding the least common multiple
abbreviate it by calling it LCM

FINDING THE LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM) 4 MINUTES

Lets practice finding the greatest common factor! Lets find the least common multiple
of 6 and 9.
List the first ten multiples of 6.
List the first ten multiples of 9.
Circle the common multiples (the multiples that appear on BOTH of your lists)
Place a rectangle around the LEAST common multiple (the LEAST of these numbers)
6: ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____.
9: ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____, ____.

What is the LCM(6, 9)? How do we know?

Did we really have write 10

multiples for each number?
Explain.

FINDING THE LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM) 4 MINUTES

This time, Lets find the LCM (3, 8).
Is it necessary to list 10 multiples for each number? How do you know?
Should we start by writing the multiples of the larger or the smaller of the two numbers? Which
ones makes finding the LCM easier? Why/How do you know?

What is the LCM(3, 8)? How do we know?

FIND THE LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM) 4 MINUTES

Lets practice finding the least common multiple! Each group will have to find the least common
multiple between a pair of numbers. Remember:
List the multiples of the numbers (it may be helpful to list the multiples of the LARGER number
first).
Circle the common multiples.
Place a rectangle around the SMALLEST/LEAST common multiple.

Group A: LCM (9, 12)

Group B: LCM (8, 9)
Group C: LCM (4, 15)
Group D: LCM (12, 30)
Group E: LCM (20, 50)

FIND THE LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE (LCM) 3 MINUTES

#1: LCM (4, 8)

#2: LCM (5, 30)
#3: LCM (25, 50)
#4: LCM (6, 18)

Do you notice a pattern?

Come up with an explanation
in your groups to explain.

PRACTICE 5 MINUTES
Hot dogs come packed 4 in a package. Hot dog buns come packed 3 in a
package. If we want one hot dog for each bun for a picnic, with none left
over, what is the least amount of hot dogs and buns we need to buy?

How many packages of hot dogs do we need to buy?

How many packages of buns do we need to buy?

PRACTICE 5 MINUTES
Mr. Campbell and Mr. E are creating new questions for VSC Math. Mr. E
makes a new problem every 5 minutes and Mr. Campbell makes a new
problem every 6 minutes. If they both start at 5PM, when is the next time they
will both make a problem at the same time?
b) How many problems will Mr. E have made?
c) How many problems will Mr. Campbell have made?

PRACTICE 5 MINUTES
Starting at 3PM, a bus makes a stop by the street corner every 15 minutes.
Also starting at 3PM, a taxi cab stops by the street corner every 12 minutes.
When is the next time there will be a bus and a taxi at the corner at the
same time?

HOMEWORK DEC. 3, 2014- SHOW ALL WORK

1) Ms. Lee is buying hot dogs and hot dog buns for the VSC barbecue. Hot dogs
come in packs of 12 and hot dog buns come in packs of 9. Ms. Lee wants the same
number of hot dogs as hot dog buns. What is the smallest number of hot dogs that
Ms. Lee can buy?
a) How many packs of hotdogs should she buy?
b) How many packs of buns should she buy?
2) Mr. Dunne and Mr. Spence are excited about a new store. Each week, Mr. Dunne
plans to spend $4 there, and Mr. Spence plans to spend $5 there. A few weeks from
now, they are surprised that they have spent the exact same amount of money at
this store. What is the lowest amount of money they could have spent at this store?
What is the least possible number of times that Mr. Spence has went to this store?
