DO NOW 5 MINUTES
Find the GCF (64, 72)

Find the LCM (6, 8)

Find the quotient:

6
6

LESSON OVERVIEW
Weve been working on finding the
GCF and LCM, and also doing a
great job of working on GCF and
LCM word problems!

I am very proud of you all! GCF and

LCM word problems can be difficult,
congratulations on your effort!

Today we will work on what

mathematicians call the
distributive property.
Today we will learn a new way to
write multiplication.

THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY 4 MINUTES

How many threes are in the picture on the left?
The dotted line breaks apart the array into two
groups. What groups do you notice?

7x3

What math equation can we write to help us add

the two groups?
Can we write this as multiplication?

(__ x 3) + (__ x 3) = ___ x 3

_____ + _____ = _____

THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY

Mathematicians
write the answer in
many ways. Many
mathematicians
would write: 3(5+2)
This is the same as
(3x5) + (3x2) or 3(7).

7x3
(21)

7x3
5x3
(15)

2x3
(6)

(3 x 5) + (3 x 2) = 3 x 7
15 + 6 = 21

TRY IT!! 4 MINUTES

Lets break apart the number
bond on the right. Try it with your
group!
Is there more than one way to
break down the number bond
on the right? List at least two
ways.

Lets list another way

to write our answer.
10 Tens
10 x 10
(100)

10(___ + ___)
10(___ + ___)
10(___ + ___)

Complete the equation.

(__ x 10) + (__ x 10) = __ x 10

_____ + _____ = _____

ONE MORE! 3 MINUTES

Lets list another
way to write our
answer.

Lets break apart the number

bond on the right!

8
threes

Is there more than one way to

break apart the number bond
on the right? List at least two
ways.

3(___ + ___)
3(___ + ___)
3(___ + ___)

Complete the equation.

3(___+___)
___
threes

___
threes

(__ x 3) + (__ x 3) = __ x 3
_____ + _____ = _____

DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY & FACTORS

We can also apply factors to the distributive property. We can factor expressions using the
distributive property!
Example #1: 12 + 18.
First, find the greatest common factor (GCF) of both numbers. This is VERY important! GCF (12, 18) = 6.
The GCF should be placed outside of the parenthesis.
12 + 18 = 6(____ + ____)
(6 x __) + (6 x __) = 6(__) = ____
Next, find the numbers that when multiplied by the GCF, the product is equivalent to the expression.
Look at the example above. Can you tell what numbers should be placed on the inside of the
parenthesis? Is the answer the same as 12 + 18?

TRY IT! 5 MINUTES

Factor the following expressions using the distributive property AND find the sum.
42 + 14 = ____(____ + ____) = _________
36 + 27 = ____(____+____) = _________
16 + 72 = ____(____+____) = _________

44 + 33 = ____(____+____) = _________
5(3) + 5(2) = 5 (__ + __) = __________

2(4) + 2(6) = 2(___ + ___) = __________

TRY IT! 5 MINUTES

Factor the following expressions using the distributive property AND find the sum.
30 + 25 = ____(____ + ____) = _________
36 + 24 = ____(____+____) = _________
Choose any numbers for n, a, and b
n(a) + n(b) = n(a + b)
n(a) n(b) = n(a b)

HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY/FRIDAY

Find the GCF and rewrite the sum or difference using the distributive property. Also fill in the blanks.

Example: 12 + 16 = 4(3 + 4) = (4 x 3) + (4 x 4) = 4(7). Sum = 28

14 + 8 = ____(____ + ____) = (___ x ___) + (___ x ___) = ___(___). Sum = _______.
20 - 5 = ____(____ - ____) = (___ x ___) - (___ x ___) = ___(___). Difference = _______.
21 + 35 = ____(____ + ____) = (___ x ___) + (___ x ___) = ___(___). Sum = _______.
100 - 30 = ____(____ - ____) = (___ x ___) - (___ x ___) = ___(___). Difference = _______.
48 + 32 = ____(____ + ____) = (___ x ___) + (___ x ___) = ___(___). Sum = _______.
Choose any numbers for n, a, and b
n(a) + n(b) = n(a + b)
