ABOUT THE CASE

Modern Snack Foods Ltd. (MSFL) is a large bread-maker with
approximately 700 employees.
It provides a wide range of products like cakes, foods and household
bread items.
It has large presence over the northern states of India.
Its bread distribution department is the smallest section of the company
consisting of 1 departmental head, 1 supervisor, 1 assistant supervisor, 3
foreman and 12 full time employees.
Sunil Bonda is the supervisor of the company, earlier he used to own a
small music shop which closed down because he couldnt break even.
He is an autocratic manager and he makes and gives all the decisions to
his assistant Ramesh Chauhan.
All the employees in the bread unit were highly paid.

But one of its employee Neeraj Kumar who works as a first shift foreman
from the last 3 years isnt happy.
His shift was changed to weekends even after Sunil assured him that he
could have Saturdays and Sundays off.
Ramesh wanted him to work in the weekends.
According to companys policy, the employee cant question the working
schedule.
Neeraj felt cheated as Ramesh didnt give him the terms he had expected
when he joined this shift.
One afternoon, Neeraj happened to meet Sunil. He explained he wanted
that evening off as he has to move some new furniture to his house.
Sunil agreed to it, but the next day when he checked the records he was
marked absent by Ramesh.
Due to this, the next shift began to suffer because of low productivity of
Neerajs group.

QUESTIONS
AND
ANSWERS

Q1.What were the factors that have

disturbed the authority and
responsibility relationships at
MSFL?
Due to the fact that it was an autocratic system of management, it
created unrest to the people working under the supervisor and his
assistant.

Due to close working relationships with Sunil, Ramesh was getting

away with wrong decisions taken by him and was also getting
promoted due to his biased recommendations.

Q2.State the reasons for the low

morale of the group handled by
Neeraj?
Neeraj could not focus on his work and thus was inefficient in his
work and thus could not motivate his group.

There was lack of productivity within the group.

Neeraj wanted to settle the score with Ramesh by showing his worth
to the company.

Q3.What should be done,

according to you, to keep this
problem from recurring?
As it is an autocratic style, the Supervisor should take initiative that his
decision remains the final and not his assistant who is unable to take
sensible decisions according to the case.
Proper chain of command within the organization should be there.

Meeting should be held for problem solving.

Employees should be treated fairly and appraised on the basis of
their work.
