interviewing over 11,000 participants, rated
the 1990s as the second best tune decade in
the last 50 years

memorable experience and the most
common, love story

Alternative Rock
Genre of rock music that emerged from the
independent music underground of the 1980s
and became widely popular by the 1990s
Differentiated from mainstream rock by its
distorted guitar sound and disruptive lyrics
Some known artists of this genre: Green Day,
U2, Nirvana

Grunge
A sub-genre of alternative rock popularized
during the 1980s but its popularity spread out
during the 1990s
Inspired by hardcore punk and heavy metal
Generally characterized by heavily distorted
electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics,
"growling" vocals and apathetic or angst-filled
lyrics

Grunge
Nirvana was more considered under this
genre but the genre was quite doubtful to
the public
During the mid-1990s many grunge bands
broke up or became less visible.

Contemporary R&B
A music genre that combines elements of rhythm
and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance
Popularized by vocalists such as Michael Jackson,
Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey

The popularity of the ballad and R&B leads to the


development of a genre called Urban adult
contemporary.
Popular American contemporary R&B artists: Mariah
Carey, Aaliyah, Toni Braxton

Hip Hop
Music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic
music that commonly accompanies rapping, a
rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted
Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic provided a
template for modern gangsta rap.
Hip hop became the best selling music genre by
the mid-1990s.

By the end of the 1990s attention turned
towards dirty south and crunk, with artists
such as Outkast, Ludacris, Missy Elliott
and Lil Wayne.
Popular songs: "U Can't Touch This by MC
Hammer; "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice

Background
The 1990s saw the Philippines experience
a Pinoy rock renaissance, after a period
dominated by love songs.
This new wave of rock was started and
spearheaded by the influential pinoy rock
band Eraserheads, Rivermaya and
Parokya ni Edgar

Best Decade of Music Ever?


No other decade has thrown up more variety
and diversity.
Britpop and the music it made was amazing.
The decade found rock and pop at their most
advanced and powerful, it also provided the
high watermark for the best of how things
used to be.
