Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM)

A form of frequency division multiplexing (FDM)

Independence
of Bit Rates
and Formats

Merges optical traffic onto one common fiber

Allows high flexibility in expanding bandwidth
Reduces costly mux/demux function, reuses existing optical signals.
Individual channels use original OAM&P

DWDM/SDH Comparison: Types Of Traffic & Services

SDH Networks:
Variety of Protection Mechanisms for High Reliability.
2 Mbps through 140 Mbps PDH Interfaces and also STM-1 through STM-4 SDH
Interfaces.
10BaseT, Fast Ethernet and ANSI (1.5 & 45 Mbps) on Wavestar 16/1 and AM-1
Products (Wavestar 16/1 also handles SONET interfaces OC-3/OC-12).

Detailed Performance Monitoring Information for SLA on all these interfaces.

DWDM Networks:
Offer Bit rate independent or transparent Lambda based services.
Protection Mechanisms for High Reliability but not as many options as SDH.
SDH/SONET interfaces at 2.5 Gbps & 10 Gbps and also Broadband interfaces for
70 Mbps through 2.5 Gbps (support Gigabit Ethernet).
Detailed Performance Monitoring Information for SLA on all these interfaces.

Summary DWDM advantages/applications

Provides a lower equipment cost for high capacities
Provides OM&P advantages mainly in Long Haul Networks
Optimizes fiber use when fiber is scarce
Enables Lamda based services

In most cases does not compete -against- SDH, but has different
applications

DWDM Basic Components

Optical Amplifier: Amplifies all channels to overcome losses due to MUX/DEMUX
components and fiber loss.

Optical Multiplexor (MUX): combines all channels (wavelengths) from separate fibers into
one fiber (many inputs and one output).
Optical Demultiplexor: separates/filters wavelengths onto separate fibers (one input many
outputs).
Optical Translator Unit (OTU): takes a standard client signal (for example SDH STM-16/64
short haul interface) at the input and translates it into the specified wavelength at the
output, this wavelength is then input to the MUX. Typical paramaters the specify an OTU
are: bit rate (2.5 Gbps, 10Gbps, etc.) and output wavelength (15xx nm). In Lucent system
there are two types of OTUs, Add (feeds the MUX) and Drop (is fed by the DEMUX).
Wavelength Add/Drop Unit (WAD): this unit extract specified wavelengths from the fiber and
passes the rest through. The advantage of the WAD is that is a site only needs a few
channels, these may be extracted and the rest are passed through directly avoiding costly
OTU units.
Supervisory channel: all DWDM system transmit on a separate wavelength from the traffic
channels, all management information.
Optical Monitoring (OMON): Lucent systems have an additional optical monitoring unit to
improve transmission performance.

Standard Single Mode Fiber -SSM- (ITU G.652)
Introduced in 1983

Most widely installed fiber type

Works very well with DWDM
Requires Dispersion Compensation (DCM) for
high speed transport, such as OC-192/STM-64
Optimized for transmission at 1310 nm wavelength
Can be used for single and multi-wavelength
transmission in the 1550 nm band

Dispersion-Shifted -DSF- Fiber (ITU G.653)
Introduced in 1985

Least popular in US; used in long distance routes in Japan, Italy,

Mexico & Latin America (Telecom Argentina, Telefonica Argentina,
CANTV Venezuela).
Between 1985-1996 many believed it was the -best- fiber for high
capacity, long distance networks
Doesnt work well for traditional DWDM (C-Band)
Requires little Dispersion Compensation for high speed transport
Optimized for single wavelength, high bit rate transmission at 1550
nm

Places severe restrictions on the number of wavelengths that can be

transmitted in the 1550 nm band

Nonzero-Dispersion (G.655), e.g. TrueWave Fiber
(Classic,Plus, RS) Cornings LSTM & Cornings
LEAFTM
Introduced in 1993
Most popular for new fiber deployment
Optimized for high bit rates and DWDM in the
1530-1565+ nm band
Possible evolution to 40 Gb/s bit rates
Allows savings in Dispersion Compensation
Modules in comparison with G.652 (SSM) fiber.

Data needed for Network design

Attenuation (dB/km) typical values between 0.23

dB/km up to .3 dB/km (old fiber), make sure
customer indicates aging and repair margens.
Type of fiber (SSM, DSF, G.655).
Dispersion: usually can be determined knowing
the fiber type.
PMD!! In old fibers, mainly DSF high PMD values
can limit DWDM transmission to 100-300 km and
Engineering rules cannot be applied.

Precaucions when designing DWDM Networks

With fiber installed within the last 3 years mainly if

its G.652 or G.655 no problems should be
encountered.
With G.653 (or DSF) to avoid problems L-Band
should be used, here PMD may also limit
performance.
With old fiber plants (4 years or older) PMD may
be an issue, this paramater must be enquired
before network design.
