WATER SYSTEM

It comprises of 30 m wide and 950 m canal

connecting the pump house to main stream of
Nile river to fulfill 1050 cum/hr.
The cost of exclusively the canal is approx. Rs.
80 crores.
The water passes through bar screening and
travelling band screen before entering the
pump house to remove the debris of river
water.
The flow of water is controlled by two sets of
stop log gates both sides of pump house.

2x100 % travelling band screen

One no of gantry crane for handling and
maintenance of travelling band screen and stop
log gates

Water from raw water screening shall led to the

raw water intake pump house for further pumping
by raw water intake pumps to the raw water
reservoir at site through GRP pipes.
Raw water system at river site consists of
Raw water intake pump house(river site)
3X50% capacity vertical wet pit type pumps ( 2
working + 1 standby)
One no NRV and manually operated butterfly valve
at the discharge of each pump
One no of recirculation line with motorised valve,
common for all pumps
One no of under slung crane for handling the
pumps

GRP Pipe lines

From the river side intake pump house, the water
is brought to the raw water reservoir by 2 nos
450 NB GRP pipes.
The length of each pipeline is approxi. 13 Km.
The GRP pipeline has 9 no of crossings having
drains, water courses, roads and railway line.
To supply the electricity to intake pump house at
river site, a 220 KV overhead line is erected
parallel to the GRP pipeline from the plant to the
river site pump house.

Have a Look

One reservoir having two compartments to store the

raw water having capacity 46000 cum each are made
at site.
Both compartment of the reservoir lead the raw water
pump house.
This raw water pump house to pump this stored water
into the pretreatment plant is made.
3X50% capacity vertical wet pit type pumps ( 2 working
+ 1 standby)
One no NRV and manually operated butterfly valve at
the discharge of each pump
Each compartment of the raw water reservoir is having
the capacity equivalent to 1 day requirement of all the
four units working.

The PTP has aerator, stilling chamber, parshall flume, clarifiers, alum dosing
system, polyelectrolyte dosing system, sludge sumps and sludge pumps.
From raw water pump house, water comes to the aerator, and from aerator to
the stilling chamber where hypochlorite from electro chlorination plant is
dosed.
The flow after the stilling chamber is passed through the parshall flume
where the alum is dosed with the help of metering pumps in the inlet channel
leading to clarifiers to form colloids so that suspended solids gets settled
down and the water has turbidity less than 10 NTU.
The flow after parshall flume get divided into two streams leading to a flash
mixer followed by a clariflocculator.
The sludge from the clariflocculator gets discharged by gravity into a sludge
sump from where it is pumped to ETP.
A chemical house is located near the clariflocculator with alum and
polyelectrolyte dosing system. The solution preparation tanks are on the first
floor and space for storage of chemicals on the ground floor. A clarified
overhead tank is provided for preparation of alum and polyelectrolyte
solutions as well as for flushing.
The water goes to Clarified Water Pump house from clariflocculator.

water is supplied to various usage for all the four
units, after proper treatment by following vertical

3x100% DM Plant forwarding pumps

2x100 % Potable Water Pumps ( Colony)
2x100% Potable Water Pumps( Plant)
3x50% HVAC Make Up Pumps
3x50% CW Make Up Pumps
2x100% APH Wash Pumps
2x100% Service Water Pumps
2x100% Fire Water Make Up Pumps
2X100% Overhead Clarified Water Tank
Filling Pumps

The clarified water pumped to DM plant

consisting of 3x45 cum/hr streams ( 2
working + 1 under regeneration ), each
consisting of pressure sand filter, activated
carbon filter and layered bed cat ion
exchanger, Decarbonator, Layered bed anion
exchanger and Mix Bed Exchanger.
Regeneration is done by NaOH and H2SO4.
The dematerialized water is stored in DM
storage tanks and pumped into the boiler
from DM makeup pump house.

To fulfill the requirement of drinking

water , within the plant, potable water
tanks is made.
To fulfill the NEC housing drinking water
requirement, a separate potable water
tank is made.

The water is pumped directly from the clarified

water pump house to air washer, ventilation
system and AC make up.

The water is pumped from clarified water pump house to

CW pump house.
This water is pumped to the condensor which exchange the
heat from the steam and changed into hot water.
This hot water comes to the cooling tower top.
From the cooling tower top, water is dropped by gravity
through PVC fills and air blow produced by fans installed at
the top of cooling tower.
This water gets cooled and collected in the CW basin slab of
the cooling tower from it goes to the CW pump house
through a canal and forbay.
This makes a closed cycle of water and any loss is fulfilled by
the Clarified Make Up pump house by pumping more water.

To fulfill the requirement of washing of air

preheaters intermittently, these are
provided.

The fire fighting system has fire water

tanks and these tanks are filled by
clarified water.
If any fire breaks out, the fire hydrant
are opened and operated to extinguish
the fire by this water.

One of the important structure in water system is

electro chlorination plant.
In electro chlorination plant, first water is taken
from CW pump house and softened by softener and
it is sent to brine preparation tank and chiller,
from where, static mixer, mix both chilled water
and brine, then it is sent to transfer rectifier from
there, it is collected to hypochlorite storage cum
degassing tank where it is blown by air dilution
blower.
This water with chlorine is distributed to three
places (a)raw water reservoir (b)CW pump house
potable water tank

The other important part of the water system is ETP

(effluent treatment plant) . In the ETP, effluent
coming from the different areas like fuel
system, surface drain of the plant, DM plant
neutralization pit, Sludge sump pit of the
pretreatment plant are collected and churned
in the sludge thickener and the sludge is
disposed in the form of cakes and the
remaining sludge is sent to Central Monitoring
Basin where all the parameter of this sludge are
checked and further treatment (Acid dosing &
NaOH dosing) is given to it before disposal for
agriculture or river.
