RAVE PARTIES AND THEIR

MEDICOLEGAL
CONSEQUENCES
INTRODUCTION
• rave party is a term used to describe
dance parties (often all-night events) with
fast-paced electronic music with the
accompaniment of laser light shows,
projected images and artificial fog.

• Entrants to rave parties are charged with


entrance fee and they are commercial
shows.
• A type of electronic dance music commonly
called techno is played at most rave parties.

• The consumption of alcohol and drugs are


the main problems with the rave culture.

• Due to the increasing trends of rave culture


most of the parties on new years eve on 31
dec. are found to be rave parties.
Alcohol
• The consumption of large doses of ethanol
causes drunkenness (intoxication).
• Depending upon the dose and the
regularity of its consumption, ethanol can
cause acute respiratory failure or death.
• Because ethanol impairs judgment in
humans, it can be a catalyst for reckless or
irresponsible behavior.
Drugs commonly used in rave
parties
• Ecstasy
• Cocaine
• Lsd (lysergic acid diethylamine)
• Marijuana
• Hashish or ganja.
• Ketamine.
• MDMA (3,4-

 MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, E


or X, is the most popular drug at raves.

 Some visual and auditory effects are
similar to those of LSD.
• Effects:
– Anxiety
– Depression, even suicidal tendency
– Irritability or aggression, even anger and rage
– Fatigue or malaise
– Agitation or restlessness
– Impaired attention, focus, and concentration, as
well as drive and motivation
– Cognitive and memory impairment, especially
short-term memory loss
– Residual feelings of empathy, emotional
sensitivity, and a sense of closeness to others

AMPHETAMINE PSYCHOSIS
• COST:
 One pill cost varies from 25$ to 50$
• Cocaine
 Cocaine is a powerful nervous system stimulant.
 Its effects can last from 15-30 minutes to an hour,
depending upon the method of ingestion.
 Cocaine increases alertness, feelings of well-being
and euphoria, energy and motor activity, feelings
of competence and sexuality.
 Anxiety, paranoia and restlessness are also
frequent. With excessive dosage, tremors,
convulsions are observed.
• Marijuana :
 Cheap, predictable and plentiful.
 It is one of the safest mood altering
substances available.
 It is impossible to overdose on and is
easy to obtain.
 Cost: 2000 rs per gram depending
upon the type of marijuana.
• LSD (lysergic acid diethylamine)
 Commonly known as acid.
 LSD is a cheap psychedelic known for
distorting and intensifying sensory input.
 Its effects also last longer.
 Cost: single dosage unit is 400-800 rs.
• Ketamine HCl
 Intense dissociative psychedelic, often
adulterated with other drugs.
• Cost: 1050 rs per gram
Medicolegal consequences
• Alcohol is stocked in total violation
of Section 36 of the Excise Act.
• It amounts to illegal possession of
liquor without any license.
• Permission must be taken from the
Excise Commission to stock and
serve large quantities of alcohol.
• Some people dress sensually.
• It amounts to obscenity and attracts provision of
Section 294 of Indian Penal Code.

 Section 294 IPC :Obscene acts and songs


Whoever, to the annoyance of others-
(a) Does any obscene act in any public place, or
(b) Sings, recites or utters any obscene song,
words, in or near any public place,
Shall be punished with imprisonment of either
description for a term which may extend to three
months, or with fine, or with both.
• One is most commonly booked under the
Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Act, if one is caught doing
drugs.
• The punishment varies from six months to
life imprisonment depending on the
quantity of drugs
NARCOTIC DRUGS AND
PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES
(NDPS) ACT 1985
• Repeals 3 acts:
1.THE OPIUM ACT 1857
2.THE OPIUM ACT 1878
3.THE DANGEROUS DRUGS ACT 1930

• The act consolidates and amends the existing


laws relating to narcotic drugs, strenghtens the
existing control over the drugs of abuse.
• Enhances the penalties particularly
for illegal trading offences, makes
provision for exercising effective
control over psychotropic substances
.

• All the narcotic substances are


specified in a schedule under this
act.
• INDECENT ASSAULT:
 Indecent assault is any offence
committed on a female with the
intention or knowledge to outrage
her modesty.
 Such assaults are punishable under
sec. 354 I.P.C.
 The punishment can extend upto 2
years of imprisonment and/or fine.
• DATE RAPE
 Drug-facilitated date rape is the use of
drugs to assist the attacker in a rape.
 The drug can be any substance that is
physical or mind altering.
 The most common date rape drugs are
alcohol, Rohypnol, and Ketamine.
 Common side effects of the drugs are
relaxation, drowsiness, loss of muscle
control, nausea, blackout, coma, and
sometimes death.
 Rohypnol is commonly known as a
“club drug” because it is usually used in
dance clubs and rave parties
CASE
• A 24 year old, Bijal Joshi was gangraped on
the eve of new year party on 31st
December 2003 by her boyfriend, Sajal Jain
and some of his friends in a hotel room.
• She was first intoxicated with alcohol and
then later raped.
• Unable to bear the torture and the
humiliation, Bijal ended her life after a
week on 7th January 2004.
