BOGIE-A brief description

4 wheel set is known as Bo-Bo type.

6 wheel set is known as Co-Co-CO type.

Former type is used as

COACH

GOODS WAGON

Later type is used as LOCOMOTIVE

Comprises of bogie frame and the loco weight mounted
on it.

EQUIPMENTS in a Bogie

It comprises the Bogie

frame.

The bogie frame has the

Axle and wheel
arrangements.

The SUSPENSION
system.

The BRAKING system.

AXLE and WHEEL arrangements

LOCO is a Tri-mount Bogie
arrangement.
COACH is a Double-mount
Bogie arrangement.
Direct drive is given.
DC series motors are mounted
over axles to provide parallel
drive.

TRACTION MOTOR is used to

provide torque.

WHEEL-conventionally used..
1992 was marked with the
commencement of the last
STEAM driven LOCO.
Spoke wheels were replaced
by modern Disc wheels.
Tiered Disc wheel was a
failure.
Solid Disc wheel are popular.

TRACTION MOTOR
To provide direct drive, each axle
is mounted with TM.
DC power is supplied.
Direct torque is provided to each
axle which drives the wheel.
Intermingling of Wheel Pinion and
Traction Spur gear occurs.
Arrangement of SAND BOX is

necessary.

SAND BOX

During rains, wheels of the train slip upon the tracks when at
very high speed.

Difference in flow of current between two particular TM

increases to 180 A.

Normal current variation permissible is 50 A.

Thus Sand box are automated at such situations.

Finely grained Sand pours upon the moving wheels.

Slippage is reduced.

GEAR CASE and AXLE BOX

Gear cases are provided above the messed Spur gear and
Wheel Pinion.

10 to 12 liters of ZERO character oil is filled in the Gear Case.

This lubricating oil cools the gear arrangement.

Axle box contains bearings that help

rotate the wheels.

During maintenance, axle box is checked

for heating up.

SUSPENSION SYSTEM
Each Loco bogie has eight outer

and inner springs each.

The spigot at the bottom of the
Spring buckle engages in a bush
seat located at the crown of the Axle
Box.
Spring stops prevent breakdown.
Motor suspension unit i.e. rubber
sandwich holds the traction motors.

BRAKING SYSTEM

Braking system is Pneumatically

controlled.

In each bogie, four brake cylinders

are fixed.

Brakes are double acting in nature.

Servo motor controlls the

movement of cylinders.

Fiber brake blocks are used.

Braking-Other details

Braking is done in Series manner.

No brakes are applied on the LOCO.

Cutoff lever fitted at the drivers end.

Maximum brake power applied is 2.5 kg/cm sq.

Brake timingFor full braking is 9 secs to 12 secs.

For full release is 9 secs to 13 secs.

Whole unit is known as Brake Hanger Lever.

MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION

Various periodic inspections are made to

ensure proper functioning of the LOCO

TRIP INSPECTION
MONTHLY INSPECTION
TWO MONTHLY NSPECTION
FOUR MONTHLY INSPECTION
YEARLY INSECTION
POH INSPECTION

POH inspection

It is accomplished either after 9

years or 9 lacs km.,whichever is
earlier.

Dismantling of bogie is done.

Parts

are

cleaned

in

acidic

solution for about four hours.

Axle box is checked for heating

up.

Evidence of cracks and other

defects are replaced.

Brake Rigging

Nuts on brake head pins should be tightened to prevent shoe

to drag at jerks.

Clearance between hangers and bogie frame is checked.

Brake shoe and brake blocks are checked whether they are

fixed properly.

Brake cylinder is dismantled, cleaned and lubricated.

Livers functionality is checked for suction of air.

All parts are finally remounted after inspection.

Bogie Manufacturing

Initially done by Casting.

Generated cracks
Rate of success was 60 %.
replacement was difficult.

Fabrication is done now a days

Welding and Oxycutting is done.
Rate of success is 80 %.
replacement of parts is easy.

Bogie-Fuel Tank

Capacity of fuel tank- 5000 litres.

At full load, consumption is 325-365 litres/hour.

Average fuel consumption is 45 litres/hour at

standby mode.

Approximately, 5.5 litres/km.

Loco- Brief Data

Weight of complete loco-123 tons.

Weight of Loco body is 73 tons.
