Example is the LEDs technologies that have grown rapidly in popularity for industrial control applications. These LEDs are commonly used in electronics and mechanical devices. Several of them can be connected to each other with one small and compact packaging called the seven segments.
Industrial application displays are designed
from high reliability application and feature extremely durable packaging for high temperature environments. Industrial application display such as seven segments is used in alpha-numeric displays in control applications. Thus, the researchers have been interest to make a prototype of one of the machines in industrial world using the seven segments.
This special project aims to show the
prototype of one of the industrial machines that uses 7 segments. We sought to determine the answers of the following:
1. How the 7 segments are use in the
industrial world? 2. How it is work?
This special project aimed to make a
prototype of one of the industrial machines that uses 7 segments. This includes the making of a circuit of the prototype. 1.3This Significance of theserved Study as a special project challenge for the researchers to widen their knowledge and their skills in the industrial world.
Industry is the application of the seven segment display in this project.
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)
is a two-lead semiconductor light source that composed the seven 1.4 Definition of segment Terms display. 7-segment Display is an electronic array of seven LEDs arranged in a way that can display numerals as well as some alphabetic characters. It is the main component used in this study.
LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes have small
sizes with different colors like red, blue, orange, yellow and green. The commonly use LEDs in the world of industry are LEDs that are having red colors. According to Wayne (2014), the main advantages of light emitting diodes are that because of their small sizes, several of them can be connected together within one small and compact package producing what is generally called a 7-segment Display.
According to Storr (2014), the 7-segment
display or also written as seven segment display are composed of seven light emitting diodes which are arranged in rectangular fashion a shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1. Seven Segment Display
These individually LED pins are labelled from a
through to f (labelled in clockwise fashion) representing each individual LED. The other LED pins are connected together and wired to form a common pin. So by forward biasing the appropriate pins of the LED segments in a particular order, some segments will be light and others will be dark allowing the desired character pattern of the number to be generated on the display. This then allows us to display each of the ten decimal digits 0 through to 9 on the same 7-segment display.
According to Storr (2014), the displays
common pin of is generally used to identify which type of 7-segment display it is. As each LED has two connecting pins, one called the Anode and the other called the Cathode, there are therefore two types of LED 7segment display called: Common Cathode (CC) and Common Anode (CA).
In the common cathode display (shown in
Figure 2), all the cathode connections of the LED segments are joined together to logic 0 or ground. The individual segments are illuminated by application of a HIGH, or logic 1 signal via a current limiting resistor to forward bias the individual Anode terminals (ag).

In the common anode display (shown in Figure
3), all the anode connections of the LED segments are joined together to logic 1. The individual segments are illuminated by applying a ground, logic 0 or LOW signal via a suitable current limiting resistor to the Cathode of the particular segment (a-g).

In order to produce the required numbers from
0 to 9 respectively, on the display the correct combination of LED segments need to be illuminated and BCD to 7-segment Display Decoders. According to Roon (2010), a Decoder IC is a device which converts one digital format into another and the most commonly used device for doing this is the Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) to 7-Segment Display Decoder.
In doing this special project, the researchers need an equipment to
make the project successful. The following equipments are: For the Circuit, we need: One digit display of 7-segment (common cathode) Two digit display of 7-segment (common cathode) SN74LS47 IC 74LS290 IC Resistor (330 ohms, 100 ohms & 1k ohms) Laser LDR Wires SN7448 IC SN7490 IC Capacitor (3.3 microfarad & 4 microfarad) 555 timer IR diode Infrared
For the conveyer, we need:
Aluminium Screws Recycled parts (e.g. old cassette VCD player and ball pen) Wood Nails L-bars Belt Potentiometer (5k) Dynamo

In doing the project, we should prepare the
materials needed in the project. In the first circuit shows the circuit that was input in the platform of the conveyer. It is composed of a 7segment display (common cathode) and ICs (integrated circuit) which are the SN74LS47 and LS290.
7-segment display is connected first to the SN74LS47
IC. From 7-segment display to SN74LS4, connections are: pin 1 to pin 9, pin 2 to pin 10, pin 4 to pin 11, pin 6 to pin 12, pin 7 to pin 13, pin 9 to pin 15 and lastly, pin 10 to pin 14. The pin 3 and pin 8 of the 7-segment and the pin 8 of the IC is connected to GND. The pin 14 of the IC is connected to the VCC. The connection between the IC and the 7-segment, 330 ohms resistor must be in series with it to minimize the voltage flowing in it to avoid the malfunctioning of the 7-segment. The pin 1 of S74LS47 IC must connect to pin 5 of 74LS290. Pin 2 to pin 4, pin 6 to pin 8 and pin 7 to pin 9. The 74LS290 IC helps the decoder SN74LS47 IC to display the digits well. When you test the circuit after connecting those connections, the numbers 0-9 are not in properly manner, so we connect a capacitor parallel with it to avoid jumping of numbers. To make the circuit not operated in manually manner, we used a LDR (light emitting diode) to trigger the circuit to count. The LDR is facing a laser. When an object passes through, the laser light was covered and the LDR trigger the circuit so that it will count from 1-9.
The platform of the conveyer is made of
the 2 aluminium with 6 inches long, 1 inch width and 1 inch high. The dynamo helps the conveyer to rotate the belt on it. With the help of the potentiometer, it controls the speed of the conveyer. The roller of the belt was made of recycled materials which is some parts of the ball pen. The platform of the conveyer was supported by L-bars.
From the conveyer, it pass to the another
platform where the object is arranged in the manually. The conveyer is the same size of the platform of the conveyer. One box is containing 9 canned products. After arranging, the box is push into the slide. But before the box slide, it passes through a sensor where the 7-segment 2 digit display counts it from 1-99. It is composed of 2 circuits. The 7-segment is connected to the SN7448 with 330 ohms resistor is in series between them. The connections between the 7segment to the SN7448 IC is the same with the connections of 7-segment display to SN74LS47 IC. The connections between the SN7448 IC to SN7490 are: pin 1 to pin 9, pin 2 to pin 8, pin 6 to pin 11 and lastly, pin 7 to pin 12. In SN7490 IC, pins 2, 3, 6, 7 and 10 are connecting to the ground. The pins 16 of the 2 ICs are connected to the VCC. Since it is composed of two circuits, the pin 14 of the SN7490 IC is connected to the pin 11 of the other SN7490.
7-segment display is composed of compact
LEDs that display alpha-numeric. It is usually used nowadays in the community and industries. In this study, the researchers make a prototype of a machine that uses a 7-segment display in industrial application. The application we make is the counting of the canned products and counting the products per box that are produce for a day. The canned products are count from 1 to 9 and then packed into the box where they are arranged manually and then pushed into the slide where the box is counted from 1-99. The 7segment that displays 2 digit numbers display the number of how many boxes does the industry produce for that day.
We conclude that using of 7-segment in
industries is a great help to the industrial control applications. It will be a great help to fasten the jobs in counting the products than counting it manually. There is an accurate counting of numbers and can record it properly for it shows it in digital manner.
