Common Radio Resource Management (Co-RRM) optimizes GSM/UMTS interoperation of the

BSC6900, which improves GSM and UMTS coexistence and raises throughput. The BSC6900
uses internal information exchange to share GSM and UMTS cell load information and to
optimize Network Assisted Cell Change (NACC). The BSC6900 performs load-based handover,
service distribution, and load balancing based on the load of the GSM and UMTS cells and
network characteristics.

XPUb control plane
signaling processing
boards

1. BSC/RNC supports new control plane signaling processing board (XPUb)

BSCs can share 1 TC.
Supports intra-BSC, inter-BSC, and inter-RAT PS HO, including NACC and NC2 procedures.
Group handover reduces service interruption from grouped service crossing cells.

for instance, of the first ping packet.
(R7)
The network side requires adaptive changes, namely saving the context.
EGRPS MS Receive
Supports EGRPS single antenna interference cancellation for dual-antenna MSs, which can increase
Diversity (MSRD) (R7
reception by approximately 4 db and raise network capacity.
Introduces two improved ACK/NACK reporting methods to reduce delay and increase timeliness compared to
EGPRS Fast ACK/NACK
existing ACK/NACK reporting:

1) Event-based RLC ACK or NACK reporting; 2) Piggybacking ACK or NACK messages in reverse-direction
UL or DL data
EGPRS RTT Reduction (R7) Combines two timeslots within the time domain while maintaining the 4-burst structure. Each timeslot uses a
10 ms TTI radio block, and the original 4-burst data is transmitted in two contiguous TDMA frames, thereby
reducing TTI.

Multi-Mode Evolution

Based on network conditions, the BSC6900 can be flexibly configured

as BSC6900 GSM, BSC6900 UMTS, or BSC6900 GU. By switching
software modes and licenses, users can achieve evolution from GSM
to GU to UMTS.

Evolution scenarios: GSM GU, GU UMTS, GSM UMTS, UMTS

GU

BSC6900 GSM is compatible with BSC6000 hardware in live networks.

BSC6900 UMTS is compatible with BSC6810 hardware in live
networks. BSC6900 GU is BSC6900 GSM and BSC6900 UMTS with
combined software management and shared OMU and clock unit
(GCU/GCG). The GSM and UMTS service boards are configured to
separate subracks.

Product Hardware Configuration

Hardware configuration involves the following steps:
Obtain operator's traffic model or capacity requirements
Calculate operator's network user plane requirement (throughput, CS Erlang), control
plane requirement (BHCA), and interface requirements
Each basic package type has a corresponding capacity based on the operator's traffic
model (throughput, Erlang, BHCA, manageable NodeBs and cells, slots for interface
boards). Select an appropriate basic package type using these parameters. Configure an
additional BSC6900 UMTS if the maximum basic package volume is exceeded.

BSC6900 OM Evolution
MBSC evolution brings OM evolution

Unified 2G/3G maintenance, striving for a single network OM experience

1. The CME is used for existing network configuration. Web LMT is used for maintenance, and the
M2000 is used for centralized management. This provides a single 2G/3G OM experience.
2. The BSC6900 provides the same device maintenance, function modes, and user experience for
2G and 3G services.
To some extent, the MBSC is redesigned for GSM. The OM system must adapt and maintain
compatibility.
MBSC focuses on the RNC structure, which fundamentally changes the GSM model and interfaces.

1.
2.
3.

GSM OM advancements bring basic changes

From single NE to centralized network OM
From LMT to a complete, coordinated M2000/CME/Web LMT solution
Changes reflected in functional deployment, which enhance centralized batch processing and
reduce single-point maintenance

Backward compatibility
1. New OM system should maintain compatibility with older products.
2. Benefits of GSM LMT are available in Web LMT and CME.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.

Huawei Confidential

Page 56

BSC6900 OM Changes
WEB LMT Reduced Single-Point Maintenance
The position of LMT in Huaweis OM system is local and remote single point device
maintenance solution for installation and emergencies. This is consistent with industry
and, because of the reorganization of WCDMA, UMTS is already deployed based on this
position. LMT is still the primary maintenance tool of GSM, and its maintenance functions
are concentrated in the LMT. The new implementation considers both innovation and
preservation of existing functions. LMT GUI configuration functions are removed and
maintenance functions are moved to MML. Web LMT preserves the majority of LMT's GUI
maintenance functions, however. These include common tasks that are difficult to execute
in MML.
CMEImproved Centralized Maintenance
CME is the primary configuration solution (M2000/LMT performs configuration only by
MML commands). For GSM, radio configuration changes to complete network-level
configuration. For UMTS, independent PC server deployment changes to M2000 unified
server deployment. The database in the integrated CME is changed from SQL Server to
Oracle, while the standalone system uses the Sybase database.
Compared to GSM LMT, the CME adds the following features: multiple concurrent users,
multiple-BSC network configuration, efficient batch processing of large data quantities,
three-area configuration (plan area, current area, and fallback area), a northbound
solution, and a single 2G/3G experience.

LMT Changes
GUI configuration
moves to the CME
BSC6900 MML
operations are improved
in the LMT
More functions will
move to centralized
management in the future
(such as tracing and
monitoring). LMT will be
supported until these
functions are mature.

Page 59

Weaknesses of New OM Solution

Greatest weakness is GSM backwards compatibility
1. Web LMT configuration functions are moved.
2. Some GUI functions are now only supported in MML.
3. Complete OM support depends on CME and M2000.
4. Operators must be retrained.
Based on a more logical organization, changes mean only temporary pain.
Web LMT function and performance issues
1. Web LMT is based on a Browser/Server (BS) architecture with no local database, which
results in longer connection times than GSM LMT.
2. Web LMT function is reduced.
Based on advanced industry trends toward clientless architectures
CME performance issues
1. CME standalone involves more processing steps than directly-connected LMT.
2. Integrated CME management of multiple NEs involves longer connection time than directlyconnected LMT management of single NEs.
Improves centralized configuration, concurrent operation, and batch processing efficiency. The
change is positive.
