IIT ROORKEE

History
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (commonly known

as IIT Roorkee or IITR), formerly the University of Roorkee


(1948-2001) and the Thomason College of Civil Engineering
(1853-1948), is a public university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand,
India. Established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant
governor, Sir James Thomason, it was given university status in
1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
in 2001, thus becoming the seventh IIT to be declared.

Ranking
Internationally, IIT Roorkee was ranked 401410 in general
category and 194 in Engineering and Technology in the QS
World University Rankings of 2011 and 65 in the QS Asian
University Rankings of 2012. In India, among engineering
colleges, it ranked 4 by India Today in 2014 and 6 by
Outlook India in 2011. In the Mint government colleges
survey of 2009 it ranked 5. Recently in the top universities list
produced by Times Higher Education, IIT Roorkee has fallen in
the category of top 351-400.

Departments & Centers


IIT Roorkee is one of the biggest technical institutions in
the country having the largest number of academic units.
It has 21 academic departments covering engineering,
applied sciences, humanities & social sciences, and
management programmes, 1 academic center, 3 centers
of excellence, 5 academic service centers and 3
supporting units.

Library
Mahatma Gandhi Central Library finds a unique place in the
academic spectrum of the Institute. Started in 1848 with a few
hundred donated books, its collection has grown to more than
3,50,000 documents in all media. Providing information through
e-resources is the main focus of the Library. It has around
90,000 sq ft of fully air conditioned space. It can accommodate
more than 500 readers at any point of time. The library building
is Wi-Fi enabled and contains a total 75 user terminals for
dedicated readers. It also contains an 80-seater open reading
room.

Cognizance
Cognizance is the annual technical festival (techfest) of the Indian Institute of Technology
Roorkee (IIT-R). Established in 2003, it has
celebrated its 12th edition in 2014. It is one of the
largest technical festivals in Asia. The 12th edition
consisted of an over 180 events and hosted 2,500
guest students, in addition to about 8,000 students
from the hosting institution.

Academic collaboration
Some of the major universities which have a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with IIT Roorkee are National University of
Singapore (NUS), Singapore; Royal Institute of Technology(KTH),
Stockholm; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne,
Switzerland (EPFL); Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich,
Switzerland (ETH); Technische Universitt Mnchen (TUM),
Germany; Institut National des Tlcommunications, Every,
France; University of Texas at Dallas, USA; New Jersey Institute of
Technology (NJIT) at Newark, USA; University of Waterloo,
Canada; University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Facilities & Infrastructure


Located on a lush 350-acre campus about 170 Kms. from Delhi, the
Institute has adequate infrastructural facilities. Roorkees proximity to
Delhi enables the Department to draw expert visiting faculty from the
metropolis. On visiting the campus, one is impressed by the elegance of
the main building in the Renaissance style of architecture, spacious lawns
and sports grounds. The campus environment is congenial for academics
and offers excellent opportunities for extra curricular activities. The
campus is aesthetically designed and consists of modern auditoriums, a
well-stocked library, a 24-hour computer center, dinning halls and mess,
canteens, banks, post- office and a railway reservation center.

IT Infrastructure
Over 50 networked nodes through TCP/IP based high speed LAN.
45 Mbps leased line, 5.2 VSAT line with internet connectivity in a distributed
environment.
All nodes connected through 10/100 Ethernet LAN SCO UNIX open server, which
includes licenses for software (SCO Xvision 97, Sun JAVA, JDK, Netscape
Enterprise Server etc.)
Application Development Software (Visual Basic 6.0, Power Builder 6.0, Visual
C++ 5.0, Designer/Developer 2000 and Visual J++).
All Hostels are Wi-Fi enabled for internet and intranet connectivity. In addition
Cyber Cafe equipped with 20 computers are functional in all hostels.
Library & Information Centre, E-Notice Board, online registration and online
placement portals.
