Project Planning & Scheduling

Project Planning &

Scheduling

Project planning and scheduling are essential skills for project

management

It is only part of project management which is complex and

deserves studying

Resource scheduling is a core issue

Can be easily achieved by Critical Path Scheduling

Many software tools are available for support

A schedule is useful only if it is

Realistic, and

Maintained up to date as the project proceeds

Project Planning &

Scheduling

A general version of the project planning and scheduling

problem assumes

A project manager has some control on the processing times of

the different jobs

Processing times of the jobs are not entirely fixed in advance

Through the allocation of additional funds from a budget

Since a project may have a deadline and a delay may involve a

penalty

Requires a trade-off between the costs of completing the project late

and the costs of shortening the durations of the jobs
5

Challenges

Some common challenges include:

Events which depend on one another in different ways or dependencies

Resource Scheduling: Scheduling people to work on, and resources

required, the various tasks

Dealing with uncertainties in the estimates of the duration of each task

Arranging tasks to meet various deadlines

Juggling multiple projects simultaneously to meet a variety of

requirements
6

Graphical Methods

Graphical networks are used for PPS

Assists effective planning

Provides a step-by-step routine

Coordinating work assignments, and

Resource utilization

Helps in establishing

Control criteria

Economical means for correcting delays

7

Network Scheduling

Network: It depicts the sequence of activities necessary to complete a

project

Segments of a project are represented by

Lines connected together to show the interrelationship of operations and

resources

A duration is associated with each segment

Shows the time distribution of each operation, and

The total project

This information can be used to coordinate the application of resources

8

Techniques

Two very well known techniques for network scheduling:

Both focus on the path of critical activities

Controls the projects duration, and

Helps in Critical Path Scheduling (CPS)

CPS is a management control tool for

Critical Path Method (CPM), and

Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)

Defining,
Integrating, and
Analyzing

All the activities which must be done to complete a project

economically and on time

Fundamentals

Regardless of the name or the graphical conventions the

fundamentals are the same

Determine a list of necessary activities

Establish a restriction list that sets the order of activities

Combine the two lists to construct a network
