Parts of a Lesson Plan

Importance of an
Instructional/Lesson Plan
No instructional plan is a magical elixir that will
guarantee one hundred percent learning. However, a
written instructional plan is an antidote to aimlessness.
It prevents us from becoming like a classroom driftwood
that is merely tossed by the winds and the waves of our
whims and caprices.

Types of Instructional/Lesson Plan

Yearly lesson plan an example would be the Philippine
Elementary Learning Competencies (PELCs) and the
Philippine Secondary Learning Competencies (PSLCs)
Term Plan for those tertiary level. The course syllabus
required of each professor or college instructor every term.
Unit Plan a segment of the yearly plan or course plan in
the same way that lesson plan is a segment of the unit plan.
Lesson Plan may be done on a daily or weekly basis.

1. Objectives
May be statement or question form. For example: An
objective like to explain the causes of the thinning down
of the ozone layer may be converted into What are the
causes of the thinning down of the ozone layer?. For
greater clarity and focus, they are preferred to be stated
behaviorally.

2. Materials
Are those instructional materials, equipment or
multisensory media that we need in teaching to attain our
objectives. They are there for us to be able to make the
abstract concrete and to arouse our references,
workbooks, teachers manuals, journals, magazines,
newspapers, simulations, games, puzzles, films, filmstrips,
film slides, computer software, chalkboard, display board,
and equipment like audio-radio cassette, television,
overhead projector (OHP) opaque projector, computer and
others.

3. Procedure
Consist of an outline of the development of the lesson. How will I
treat the topic of subject matter? What strategies and techniques
shall I employ? What questions shall I ask? What activities shall I
give to my students? In short, with a particular lesson objectives
and with materials at my disposal, how shall I proceed?
Five major elements of instructional procedure by Orlich. 1.
focusing event (motivation) 2. teaching procedures (use of
pivotal questions, techniques) 3. formative check (evaluation or
assessment in the process of teaching) 4. student participation,
(activities) 5. closure (summary)

6. Assignment
For more elaborative learning and for the ultimate
purpose of mastery learning, homework or assignment is
given. Assignments are synapse strengtheners. When
done consistently, they reinforce the retention of concepts,
the fixing of skills, the internalization of values and
cultivation of good habits.
They likewise serve as preparation for the next lesson.
