What is BSI? The basics

Stands for the British Standards Institution (BSI).

BSI was the first national standards making body in the world.

It is independent of government and a non profit organisation.

EN means the standard is European and used throughout Europe.

It is globally recognised and serves the private and public sectors.

It represents the UK interest across all of the European and


international standards committees.

BSI has published more than 21,000 standards.

What is a standard?

A standard is a published specification that establishes


a common language. It contains a technical
specification and is designed to be used consistently.

Standards are applied to many materials, products,


methods and services.

A standard is produced as follows:

BS means the standard is British and used mainly in


the UK.

How does BSI benefit us?

Benefits: they make life simpler and increase the


reliability and effectiveness of goods and services.

What is CE Marking?
The basics

CE marking is used for many products, such as new


toys, which must meet legal requirements before they
can be sold within the European community.

CE marking attached to a product is a manufacturers


claim that it meets all the requirements of the European
legislation.

A product with kitemark and CE marking? This shows


that BSI has independently tested them against the
appropriate standard.

How does CE marking benefit
us?

Benefits: they make life simpler and increase the

It also allows manufacturers, importers', distributors


and retailers to market products across Europe, using
the same symbol.

What is ISO? And ISO 9000?
The basics

ISO is the International Organisation for Standardisation. It also means


equal in Greek!

BSI also creates standards that to help businesses improve the way they
operative.

BS EN ISO 9000 is a family of standards. They were last revised in the year
2000.

The ISO 9000:2000 is an individual standard for Quality management


systems fundamentals and vocabulary.
