The Defense Research and Development Laboratorys Hypersonic

Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) is intended to attain
autonomousscramjetflightfor20sec.,usingasolidrocketlaunchbooster.
The research will also inform Indias interest in reusable launch vehicles.
TheeventualtargetistoreachMach6.5atanaltitudeof32.5km.(20mi.).
Initial flight testing is aimed at validating the aerodynamics of the air
vehicle,aswellasitsthermalpropertiesandscramjetengineperformance.
S. Panneerselvam, the DRDLs project director, says engineers aim to
beginflighttestingafull-scaleair-breathingmodelpoweredbya1,300-lb.thrustscramjetengineinnearfuture.

Development

The design for airframe attachment with the engine was

completedintheyear2004.
IsraelhasprovidedsomeassistanceontheHSTDVprogram,
including wind tunnel testing, as has Cranfield University of
theU.K.
Duetotechnologydenialofmaterialforthescramjetengine,
a new program was initiated and the materials were
developedin-house.
This led to self sufficiency in the area and the scramjet
enginewasgroundtestedsuccessfullyfor20sinsteadofthe
initial3s.

Progress

InNovember2010,DRDOofficialstoldpressthattheywerein
theprocessofopeningfourstate-of-the-artfacilitiesinsideas
wellasinthevicinityofHyderabadatacostofmorethan10
billion(US$162million) over the next five years. Reportedly,
they will invest3 to 4billion (US$66 to 88 million) for setting
up a much-needed hypersonic wind tunnel at Hyderabads
MissileComplex.
AsofDecember2011,thescientistshadprovedtechnologies
foraerodynamics,aero-thermodynamics, engine and hot
structuresthroughdesignandgroundtesting.
