What is Transitional
Employment?

 Definition:

“Transitional work programs offer


temporary, subsidized employment
in a supportive environment to those
who lack work experience, education,
or training”
Brief Introduction:

 Transitional employment helps members get real


jobs in the community at competitive wages. It
makes it possible for individuals who have no work
history or previous work failures to access job
placement. 

 These jobs are usually designed for individuals with


one or more barriers to employment: they might be
homeless, or have substance abuse issues.

 The basic elements of transitional employment—


job development and placement, on-the-job
training, and short-term support and follow-up
were implemented in the demonstration.

 This helps employees keep current in terms of


new trends and technologies, and allows them to
stay at the top of their professions.

 Through transitional employment system,


employees are able to easily seek out new
opportunities and look at many different career
avenues.

 With growing shortages of reliable unskilled labor,


employers are continuing to expand efforts to
hire individuals with mental and physical
disabilities previously believed to be
unemployable in the competitive labor market.
Program description:
 The goal of transitional employment is to give
individuals work experience so they are able to
transition into other jobs that will enhance their self-
sufficiency.

 At the start of transitional employment, the


individual will work with Goodwill staff to identify
goals and objectives.

 Individuals continue to perform their regular duties.


Program description:
 All individuals work with a case manager to assure
that they are progressing toward self-sufficiency.

 While working, participants develop “soft skills” like


conflict resolution, communicating with supervisors
etc..

 Work assignments may be made at various locations


to best suit the participant.
