MAJOR FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM
CHEMISTRY OF FIRE
The term fire may be defined as a rapid, self-sustaining
oxidation process accompanied by the evolution of heat
and light of varying intensities. In other words "fire is
a chemical reaction between a fuel and oxygen in the
presence of heat".

The flaming mode, on the other hand, incorporates four

basic requirements, viz. Heat, oxygen, combustible
substance and in addition, another factor called the
Fire of
uninhibited chain reaction tetrahedron
combustion process.

KARAT - M & INHIBITOR SYSTEM
Karat-M is a system which automatically
activates the fire fighting system and raises alarm
for all magazines, missiles container, halo hangar
and the kerosene stores. In case auto system fails,
the spraying can be activated in emergency from ops
room and ECP (Emergency Conning Position). The
system operates and ensures the activation of fire
fighting mechanisms in hazardous conditions.

KARAT - M & INHIBITOR SYSTEM
KARAT-M comes into operation if the temperature
in the compartment goes beyond 70 degree centigrade
(+/- 7oC) or the pressure inside the compartment
increases beyond 0.08Kg/ cm2. In all these
compartments the system can also be actuated from
ECP containing the panel called 'DOZOR‘. Also the
sprinkling system in each of the magazine and halo
hangar can be actuated from local position through
pneumatically operated quick opening valve.

CO2 SMOTHERING SYSTEM
CO2 smothering systems are fitted to the main
machinery spaces. The system consists of a bank of CO2
cylinders which are fitted in CO2 compartment outside
the machinery compartment. A pipe line runs from
cylinders to a number of nozzles in each space. The
system is operated from control positions situated
over the compartment they serve and each consists of a
box containing:-
A valve to control the supply of gas to the
compartment.
A pull handle which operates the release mechanismNEXT at
CO2 SMOTHERING SYSTEM
The procedure for releasing the CO2 is :
Open control box, this actuates the built-in switch
for alarm and all alarm belts sound simultaneously.
Check that the compartment being drenched is
evacuated.
Open the distribution valve by operating the valve
handle by 90 degree.
Grip the pull handle firmly and pull down wards by
about 18”. The pressure of carbon dioxide released will
sound a pressure operated alarm.
