HONOR &

RESPECT

WAY OF LIFE RETREAT, ALNP - TACLOBAN

Why do we honor and respect one

another ?

Because we are sons

and daughters of God
Because we are sons and daughters of God:
we accord to each other the dignity that
belongs to the children of God.
We were made in God's likeness and
image: Holy
We relate to the things of God in a special
way that speaks of their worth precisely

Why do we honor and respect one another ?

Because we acknowledge our special

relationships as brothers and sisters in
Christ
Romans 12:10 -- "Love one another with
brotherly affection, outdo one another in
sharing honor."
In other translations, "respect" is used for
"honor"

WORLDS WAY
Has an ulterior motive
Biased and selective: some
are considered not worthy of
honor because they are weak
or ugly or poor or uneducated

SCRIPTURAL TEACHING
Biblical and Hebrew and
Greek terms for HONOR
have a sense of "weight",
"heaviness", "price" and
"preciousness"

HONOR
Both terms "honor" and "respect" refer
to value and worth -- that's why they
are interchangeable
More properly, HONOR belongs to
someone or something that is valuable
The One we are to precisely honor is
God because He is everything good,
everything worthy of honor -- honor
"belongs" to God

HONOR

Everything else deserving honor is

honorable because of its relationship with
God
Not because they are beautiful, strong,
intelligent or wealthy or because we can get
something from them

The contrast between the Christian and

the worldly views of honor: the way of the
world is to seek honor, the Christian way
is to give it

RESPECT

In addition to honor, Christians should also

show respect for those who are over them in
the Lord.
In contemporary English, RESPECT has a
general meaning which is very close to the
meaning of the word HONOR
Respect": in modern English, has to do with acting
courteously toward people, being helpful and
refraining from harming them or intruding upon them.

RESPECT

Key point: in Biblical terms, not everyone is due

respect but everyone is due honor (in some form or
another)
The difference between HONOR and RESPECT is that
honor acknowledges the worth of a person while respect
acknowledges one's subordination
