4-STROKE SI ENGINE

Cycle completes in four-strokes of the

piston i.e two revolutions of the
crankshaft.

Four strokes are suction, compression,

expansion and exhaust.

Working cycle(otto
cycle)

Why do we need to explore

SIX-STROKE ENGINE?
Four

stroke Diesel cycle and Otto cycle

engines
have
very
low
thermal
efficiency due to high amount of energy
is lost in exhaust and also cooling of the
engine

It

is estimated that about 35 percent of

fuel energy is lost in exhaust of engine
and 30 percent in cooling of engine

SIX-STROKE ENGINE
Modified

form of 4-stroke engine

The

six stroke engine is added with

additional power stroke to increase its
efficiency

Consists

of two power stroke and two

exhaust stroke

The

first four stroke of a six-stroke engine

resembles a four stroke-engine

CROWER Six Stroke Engine

In 2006, Bruce Crower managed to develop this

engine.

TheCROWER six-stroke engineis a claimed

high-efficiency variant of aninternal combustion
engine under development by Bruce Crower.

Two extra strokes are added to the customary

internal combustion engine, which makes asix
stroke engine. A third down-stroke is a "steam
stroke" and a third up-stroke exhausts the
expanded steam while venting heat from the
engine

In this six-stroke engine, when the

combustion
chamber
temperature
reaches approx. 400 F (200 C). Just
before the fifth stroke, fresh water is
injected directly into the hotcombustion
chamber through the water injector
pump

This injected water is quickly turned to

superheatedsteam, which causes the
water to expand to 1600 times its volume
and forces the piston down for an
additional Power stroke

BAJULAZ SIX STROKE ENGINE

a

modified cylinder head with two

supplementary chambers: a
combustion and an air heating
chamber, both independent from the
cylinder.

Combustion,

does not occur within the

cylinder but in the supplementary
combustion chamber

Combustion

chamber is surrounded by air

heating chamber

VELOZETA SIX STROKE

ENGINE

Developed

in 2005 by a team of
mechanical engineering student, Mr. U
Krishnaraj, Mr. Boby Sebastian, Mr. Arun
Nair and Mr. Aaron Joseph of the College
of Engineering, Trivandrum

Similar
The

to Crower Six Stroke engine.

only difference is that air is used

instead of water to get 5th power stroke.

Main advantages of the of

the six-stroke engine

Thermal efficiency reaching 50%. (30% for the actual

internal combustion engines)

Fuel consumption reduced by more than 40%

Reduction of chemical, noise and thermal pollution

Two expansions (work) through six strokes

Multi-fuel

Cost comparable to 4-stroke engine as no cooling

system is required. Also direct injection with no spark
plug

Steam stroke cools the engine internally hence the

use of much highercompression ratios

SPECIFICATION OF SIX STROKE

ENGINE

PROTOTYPE - DUCATI BASED

Comparison Of Six Stroke Engine With Four Stroke Engine

LIMITATIONS AND
OBSTACLES

Injecting

relatively cold water onto a hot

metal piston can damage it over time
from thermal expansion and contraction.

Separate

water
tank
would
have
significant weight and space penalties

steam-free cool down reduces the

temperature
inside
the
combustion
chamber.

Cold

climate anti-freezing measures

would be needed in the water reservoir

BETTERMENT
To

prevent damages due to the action of cold

water, we can utilize the exhaust gases for preheating of water.

We

can use a condenser instead of a separate

water tank which will reuse the distilled water for
a period of cycles.

To

compensate the temperature drop inside the

chamber
we
can
further
increase
the
Compression ratio which increases the power
output making it suitable for higher power
requirements.

CONCLUSION
Its

been time for us to think of something

beyond the conventional engines that
pollute Nature. The six-stroke engine fits
perfectly into this view. Its adoption by
the automobile industry would have a
tremendous impact on the environment
and world economy, assuming up to 40%
reduction in fuel consumption and 60% to
90% in polluting emissions, depending on
the type of the fuel being used.
