ESSENTIAL MATERIALS FOR

THE NATIONAL EXAM PREPARATION

National Exam:
National Exam (UN) 2012 onwards is
purely based on the competence (the 2004
Curriculum or the Standard of Content).
The competence standard of graduation
(SKL) for the 2012, 2013 and 2014
academic year is the same. Whereas, the
2015 academic year will be any changes
since the government has applied the
2013 curriculum for grade 10 and 11. The
NE for grade 11 will be any chances.

The National Exam covers Listening,


Reading and Writing skills.
Listening skill: interpersonal/transactional
dialogues and monologues. It covers 15
test items, namely: number 1 to 15.
Reading skill: functional texts and
monologue texts. It covers 35 test items,
namely: number 16 to 50.
Writing skill:
Arranging sentences into the correct text (1 test
item), it focuses on
recount/procedure/narrative/descriptive and,
A close procedure (3 test items) Vocabulary (verb,
adverb, adjective, noun or derivational forms).

Essential Materials for listening skills:


Conversation/dialogue:
1. Interpersonal/ transactional dialogues:
The general idea
The detail information
The implicit information
2. Question and Response focusing on using
Expressions (gambits):
Ungkapan rasa tak percaya
(believe/unbelieve),;rasa surprise; rasa puas/
tidak puas (satisfied/unsatisfied); relief;
menyatakan/ meminta pendapat (opinion);
admitted wrong; berjanji (promise);
encouragement; and/or harapan (hope).

3. To determine the appropriate picture


o To determine the appropriate picture regarding
the transactional/interpersonal dialogue (2 dialogues
and 2 different pictures, i.e. an insect, musical
instrument, or healthy instrument).
oTo determine the picture regarding the description of an insect/an
animal.
4. Monologue:
oDescriptive text: the general idea, the specific
information based on the description of a thing/ a
building.
oNarrative text: the general idea, the detail
information, etc., based on the story.

Essential Materials for the reading skills:


Functional texts:
1. Announcement: specific information, general idea/communicative purpose, and
word meaning.
2. Letter: general idea, communicative purpose, specific information.
3. Ads/ brochure: general idea, specific information.
Monologue Texts:
4. News Item: general idea, detail infromation, communicative purpose and word
meaning.
5. Recount: main idea, detail information, implicit information.
6. Report: general idea, detail information, implicit information,
general idea/communicative purpose.
7. Explanation: general idea, detail information/communicative
purpose, implicit information.
8. Exposition (analytical or hortatory expositions): general idea,
detail information, communicative purpose, word meaning.
9. Discussion: detail information, main idea, implicit information.
10. Review (2): specific information, general idea, implicit
information, detail information, and/ or communicative purpose.

WRITING
1. Procedure/Narrative text
2. Recount/descriptive text

Reading skills:
Scanning skill (reading to find out the specific
information, such as time, place or the main
character)
Skimming skill (reading for the gist or the
main idea, and the general idea)
Intensive reading skill (reading to find out the
detail information or explicit or implicit
information)

The main idea or the topic sentence:

Richards and Schmidt (2002, p. 558): state that:


a topic sentence is a sentence that describes the topic, the purpose
or the main idea of a paragraph, i.e. that states what the paragraph is
about.
In writing an essay, a topic sentence can be located in the first
sentence with the other sentences adding illustrative or supporting
details.
Alternatively, it can be located in the final sentence of the
paragraph.
Sometimes the topic sentence in a paragraph can also be unstated
but implied.
In English, a topic sentence often contains an opinion that will be
proved or supported in the paragraph or statement that the writer
will explain in more detail in subsequent paragraphs.

STRATEGY FOR THE SUCSESS OF THE


NATINAL EXAM
Teaching or drilling the essential materials.
Trying out students with materials and
indicators of National Exam more than 3
times.
Discussing the test items of TO with
students intensively.
Discussing the past National Exam items
with the students in detail.
Learning the past National Exam (40%) and
predicting the next National Exam (60%).

Practice Exam: Speaking


Skill
The exam of Speaking skill is
conducted by each school oriented
on their capacities, English teachers
and students abilities which led and
instructed by Department of
Education of each Province.

Speaking Skills:
Interpersonal/ transactional dialogues,
Monologue such as story telling, describing a
thing, report, explanation, discussion, review
and debating etc.
