Patient Evaluation
By the end of final year BDS, students should be able to:

E v a l u a t e a patient for tooth extraction.


Welcome; introduce; seat the patient
elicit relevant medical and dental h i s t o r y
set up the instrument tray
perform e x a m i n a t i o n
order and interpret relevant i n v e s t i g a t i o n s
arrive at a d i a g n o s i s
(indications and contraindications for extraction of teeth)
Manage relative contraindications for extraction of teeth
Formulate, prioritize and finalize a t r e a t m e n t p l a n ,
and take consent

By the end of final year BDS, students should be able to:

Select appropriate local anaesthesia (LA) and


supplemental LA technique, and administer LA
Name the n e r v e s that need to be anaesthetized to
extract individual teeth
Discuss the functions of each constituent of L A
cartridge
Calculate the s a f e d o s e o f L A
Explain the reasons/mechanisms for L A f a i l u r e
Identify signs of L A t o x i c i t y / o v e r d o s e , and
manage LA toxicity
List steps of i n f e r i o r a l v e o l a r n e r v e b l o c k , and
of i n fi l t r a t i o n a n a e s t h e s i a for extraction of

Perform tooth extraction

Detach gingiva
Use the n o n - d o m i n a n t h a n d to retract soft
tissues and provide jaw support
L u x a t e tooth (expand bone) using elevators and
forceps
d e l i v e r the tooth
provide p o s t e x t r a c t i o n c a r e and
instructions
