Smart Grid
In 2009 President Barack Obama asked the United States Congress "to
act without delay" to pass legislation that included doubling alternative
energy production in the next three years and building a new electricity
Smart Grid". On April 13, 2009, George W. Arnold was named the first
National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability. In June 2009,
the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology ) announced a
Smart Grid interoperability project via IEEE P2030.
Home automation technologies like Zigbee, INSTEON and Zwave are
viewed as integral additions ( ie. Technological Convergence ) to the
Smart Grid. The ability to control lighting, appliances, HVAC as well as
Smart Grid applications ( load shedding, demand response, real-time
power usage and price reporting) will become vital as Smart Grid

initiatives are rolled out.
Smart Grid
Today's alternating current Power Grid ( History ) : Today's alternating current power grid
evolved after 1896, based in part on Nikola Tesla's design published in 1888 (see War of
Currents).
Many implementation decisions that are still in use today were made for the first time
using the limited emerging technology available 120 years ago.
Specific obsolete power grid assumptions and features ( like centralized unidirectional
electric power transmission, electricity distribution, and demand-driven control)
represent a vision of what was thought possible in the 19th century.

Lighting control system ( Definition ): Lighting control system consists of a device, typically an
embedded processor or industrial computer, that controls electric lights for a building or residence.
Lighting control systems usually include one or more keypads or touch panel interfaces.
These interfaces allow users the ability to toggle power to lights and fans, dim lights, and program
lighting levels.

Air Conditioner + Inverter: An air conditioner bearing the inverter tag uses a variable-frequency
drive to control the speed of the compressor motor.
The inverter type air conditioners has the ability to continuously regulate its thermal transfer flow by
altering the speed of the compressor motor in response to cooling demand.
Inverter: An inverter is an electrical device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current
(AC); the converted AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use of appropriate
transformers, switching, and control circuits.

Technological Convergence
EXAMPLES ( ie. MediaMorphosis )
Technological convergence is the tendency for different technological systems to evolve
toward performing similar tasks.
Digital convergence can refer to previously separate technologies such as voice (and
telephony features), data (and productivity applications), and video that now share resources
and interact with each other synergistically.
