How can they be leveraged for better communication?
What are the fears around social media in school?
Are there any bright spots where social media is
already being used successfully?

everyone committed to transparency? What is your time
frame?

your decision making?
Khansa Tarar

Policy Guidelines
Draft Your Document and Incorporate Feedback
How will you make your drafts available to the community?
How much input do you want?
Should you set limits to prevent overload?

Make Sure the Dean and School Board See the Draft

ordinances? What do you need to do to get buy-in from
your school board?

Policy Guidelines
Introduction to the School Community
How will you introduce the policy or guidelines to your
community? Will you hold meetings at all schools? Send
emails?
Do any major themes emerge in your communitys
feedback?
What will you do if the guidelines are not well received?
Khansa Tarar

Policy Guidelines
Review Periodically
Your new policy or guidelines should be a living document
and should be revisited often.
Social media products change. Your culture will change.
Policies will change.
Your team needs to look at your document at least
annually to determine whether it is working and whether
any adjustments need to be made

How do I format the Page?

Choose aprofile picthat is identifiable at very small sizes.
A logo works best, that includes the logo of SOCA
Becausecover imagestake up so much screen real estate,
choose an image that is both visually appealing and
contributes to telling part of your unit's story.
While your profile pic should rarely, if ever, change,
cover images can be updated frequently to reflect
current activities or initiatives of your unit.

How do I format the Page?

TheAbout fieldof your Basic Information page will appear
prominently below the profile pic. Use this space to sum up your
mission statement or briefly describe SOCA. Make sure the other
fields on this page contain accurate information.
To the right of the About statement are multipleApp slots. These
function as buttons that allow the user to directly access certain types
of content your unit has posted, such as Photos, Events and Videos.
You can choose which Apps to feature by marking them as favourites.

Content Ideas:
Idea #1: Share the School Calendar.
Idea #2: Link to Positive Stories.
Was your school featured in the local paper? Post a link.
Did the basketball team win a big game? Post a link.
Was a teacher interviewed for the news? Post a link.
And don't forget that a school is part of something bigger
-- share nation-wide success stories as well.

17

Content Ideas
Idea #3: Post Photos of Events.
Many of us carry smartphones that allow us to both take
pictures and upload them to Facebook, so this can be a very
simple process.
Even if in general you don't post photos of individual learners,
take team or action shots at athletic events.
Band and choir concerts, student art shows, science fairs,
school plays and other such events offer the opportunity to
highlight what schools offer beyond the basics.

Content Ideas
Idea #4: Congratulate Students and Staff Who
Achieve.
A sentence congratulating the students of the week,
teacher of the month, best player, actor, singer.

19

Going Deeper
Post a Photo of the Weekon a consistent day and time.
Thanks to smartphones, this can be relatively easy.
And giving people a glimpse into a school reminds them that it is
a real place where real students go.
In addition to (or in lieu of) and so on. photos of students,
consider pictures of cafeteria food, students' shows, hallway
banners, classroom pets, school media centres
You may also invite teachers, students and parents to submit
photos for consideration.

20

Highlight New and Retiring Teachers and Staff.

Facebook can be a great way to welcome new staff and
celebrate the accomplishments of those moving on.
In addition to sharing their photos, create short
questionnaires for them to complete.
Choose a highlight to include in the post, and upload the
complete document.

5/5/15

21

Create Written or Video Q & As with Students.

To start, target a small group of students (such as student
representatives, athletes, participants in other activities or
winners of academic awards) to share their perspectives on
their school. After conducting a few, you may want to open
it up to all students.

Khansa Tarar

5/5/15

22

Feature Alumni & Dignitaries .

Create written or video Q & As with recent graduates
discussing their transition to professional career. These
pieces both contribute to PR by highlighting success and
serve as advice for current students and parents.

Khansa Tarar

5/5/15

23

Post Strategically
Be consistent in posting multiple times a week
Include photos with your post when possible
Don't publish too many stories in the same time frame (no
more than three in a 24-hour period)
Don't publish multiple stories about the same subject in
the same time frame
