Management and

Conservation of Natural
Resources

What are natural resources?

Natural resourcesare naturally
occurring substances that are considered
valuable in their relatively unmodified
(natural) form.
In other words , Natural resources are
materials and components (something
that can be used) that can be found within
the environment.

Natural resources can be classified

Renewable resources .
Eg:- all plants and animals
Non renewable resources.
Eg:- fossil, fuels, minerals etc

What is calling our attention?

India as country is blessed with rich natural
resources . But from our research on the usage of
natural resources in our country, we found that the
resources are depleting every day. For example:
Forest and cultivated land is being depleted due
to urbanization, overpopulation and
overconsumption.
Wild life resources are being lost due to illegal
poaching, hunting and industrialization.
Water resources are being contaminated are
drying up due to industrialization.

Threats to our natural

resources?
Urbanisation and Industrialisation
Overpopulation
Overconsumption and irresponsible use.
Deforestation
Erosion
Habitat Destruction
Natural Hazards
No proper access to resources such as
water

Natural resources
management
Natural resource managementrefers
to the management ofnatural resources
such as land, water, soil, plats and
animals, with a particular focus on how
management affects the quality of life for
both present and future generations.

Why should we manage our

natural resources?
Natural resources are over exploited
leading to several critical consequence
which will put the future plant, animal and
human society in serious risk.
Due to increase in the population,
industrialization and urbanization the
demand for natural resources is increasing
and their availability is limited. So there is
a need for proper management of natural
resources.

The proper management of

natural resources consist
of: Judicious use of natural resources and
avoiding wastage of natural resources.
Long term planning for the use of natural
resources so it last not only for the present
but also for future generations.
The exploitation of natural resources
should not be the benefit of a few people
but should be disturbed equally.
While extracting and using natural
resources we should also plan for the safe
disposal of wastes so that no damage is
caused to the environment.

Conservation of natural
resources
Conservation is the proper management of a
natural resource to prevent its exploitation,
destruction or degradation.
Conservation is the sum total of activities, which
can derive benefits from natural resources but
at the same time prevent excessive use leading
to destruction or degradation.

Need for conservation of

natural resources :There is an urgent need to conserve the
nature. Some of the needs are: To maintain ecological balance for
supporting life
To prevent different kinds of
species(biodiversity)
To make the resources available for
present and future generation.
To ensure the survival of human race.

Resources to be conserve
Soil
Water
Forest
Biodiversity
Energy

Conservation of soil
Soil loses its fertility due to erosion. So
we need to conserve the soil. Soil
conservation means checking soil
erosion and improving soil fertility by
adopting various methods : Maintenance of soil fertility
Control on grazing
Reforestation
Terracing

Conservation of water
Conservation of water are essential for the survival
of mankind, plants and animal. This can be
achieved adopting the following methods:

Growing vegetation in the catchment areas, which will hold

water in the soil and allow it to percolate into deeper layers
and contributes to formation of ground water.
Constructing dams and reservoirs to regulate supply of
water to the fields.
Sewage should be treated and only the clear water should
be released into the rivers .
Industrial wastes should be treated to prevent chemical and
thermal pollution of fresh water.
Judicious use of water in our day to day life.
Rainwater harvesting should be done by storing rainwater
and recharging groundwater.

Conservation of biodiversity

1.
2.

We know the importance of biodiversity

for our survival and how it is destroyed.
Let us know how to protect the
biodiversity. There are 2 basic strategies
for conservation of biodiversity:In-situ conservation
Ex-situ conservation

Conservation of forests
Conservation

of forest is a national problem so it

must be tackled with perfect coordination between
forest department an other department.
The cutting of trees in the forests must be stopped at
all cost
Afforestation or special programmes like van
mahotsava should be launched on grand scale
Cutting of timber and other forest produce should be
restricted
Forest conservation Act 1980 should be strictly
implemented to check deforestation
Grasslands should be regenerated .

Energy conservation is the reduction of quantity

of energy used. Energy conservation supports the
eco friendly lifestyle by providing energy, which
saves your money and at the same time saves
the earth. When you decrease the amount of
energy you use you automatically make efforts to
reduce increasing global warming.

Source of conservation of
energy

Solar energy:-Solar power uses the sun's energy and

light to provide heat, light, and electricity for homes.
Wind energy:- Wind energy is often used to generate the
mechanical power or the electricity.
Geothermal energy:-Geothermal energy is used in the
form of thermal energy, electrical energy, nuclear energy,
mechanical energy, chemical energy and light energy.
Wave energy:-Ocean waves contain large amount of
energy, which can be extracted through Ocean winds,
Ocean currents, Ocean Geothermal etc
Hydroelectricity :-Another renewable source of energy
is the hydroelectric energy, which is produced from fast
flowing water.
