Walt Disney

Introduction

Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago.

At age four (1906), Walt and his family moved to a farm in


Marceline, Missouri.

While in Marceline, Walt developed his love for drawing.

At the age of 7 he sold his first drawing to the neighbours.

Disney began his freshman year of high school at McKinley High


School and also began taking night courses at the Chicago Art
Institute.

Disney became the Cartoonist for the school newspaper.

Disney dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to join the


Army, but was rejected because he was underage.

Walt and his friends then decided to join the Red Cross and they
were sent to France for a year, where he drove an ambulance.

Disney then took up an interest in the field of animation.

FAILURES

Worked at railway station selling snacks and news paper.

In January 1920, Disney and Iwerks made a company called,


Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artist

He was fired by a newspaper editor because "he lacked


imagination and had no good ideas.

MGM rejected his idea of mickey mouse.

START OF THE SUCESS

Alice Comedies

This was the beginning of the Disneys Brothers Studio.

In 1925, Disney hired a young women named Lillian Bounds to


ink and paint celluloid.

The series Alice Comedies was successful.

The series ended in 1927, and Walt focused more on the


animated characters, like Julius who resembled Felix the cat.

Mickey Mouse

Walt had been developing called Mickey Mouse. The first


animated shorts featuring Mickey was Plane Crazyandit was a
silent films for which they failed to find distribution.

When sound made its way into film, Disney created a soundand-music-equipped short calledSteamboat Willie. With Walt
as the voice of Mickey, the cartoon was an instant sensation.

In 1929, Disney createdSilly Symphonies, which featured


Mickey's newly created friends, including Minnie Mouse, Donald
Duck, Goofy and Pluto.

One of the most popular cartoons,Flowers and Trees, was the


first to be produced in color and to win an Oscar.

On December 21, 1937,Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the


first full-length animated film, premiered in Los Angeles. It
produced an unimaginable $1.499 million and won a total of
eight Oscars.

Cinderellawas released in 1950, followed byAlice in


Wonderland(1951),Peter Pan(1953), a live-action film
calledTreasure Island(1950),Lady and the Tramp(1955) and
Sleeping Beauty(1959). In all, more than 100 features were
produced by his studio.

Disney was also among the first to use television as an


entertainment medium.

summer of 1955.

It was to be called the Magic Kingdom.

Disneyland has expanded its rides over time and branched out
globally with parks in Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong, with a

to carry his name.
