Goals for Intramuros

Make Intramuros a historical and cultural hub
Have a thriving and sustainable community

Expectations
Informal settlers would be on the way
Budget would be one of the big problems
Cooperation among residents would be difficult but crucial

Strategies
We would like residents to partake in the Tourism industry
Private establishements and businesses are welcome
Housing for informal settlers is a dire need
Raising of funds is a must

Recommendations
We would like to lay out a dialogue in Intramuros where the residents can
voice out their side of the story
We would encourage private businesses to open up with the help of
Intramuros

What is Intramuros
now?
A densely populated city
Over 3400 families residing
inside the city

Majority of the population are

informal settlers

Thus, there are a lot of shanties

and/or blighted areas around the
city

Not all are employed

Issues
Negligence of residents/informal settlers
Employment
Pollution
Blighted areas
Safety

Opportunities
Those who will remain in Intramuros could cooperate with the Tourism
Program
Privately-owned properties could be used to start a business

Hitting three birds with one stone

Bring income to families living in Intramuros
Help spread awareness to residents and tourist alike that Intramuros is a
historical site and should be preserved
Promote tourism enough to uplift the city, slowly, steadily, but surely

What do we envision for

Intramuros?
With the help of Intramuros Administration, we envision
Intramuros to be a place where tourists could learn and
experience our history and culture
A place where the community cooperates with the local
government by being part of the Tourism industry

How do we address the problem?

Housing for the informal settlers
Job opportunities
Tourism Program

What should we do?

Only by working together, the government and the people, could we
achieve success
Hearing both sides of the story is crucial in solving the problems
Asking people of ideas would be helpful

Planning
Get people involved
Train them
Provide a framewok that they would understand and is beneficial for
both parties

What would happen if we leave

Intramuros as it is?
For the officials:
There would be no
budget problems
in rejuvenating
Intramuros
There would be no
resettlement
programs to think
of

For the city:

Intramuros will deteriorate and lose its

beauty

Nobody will respect its significance

Our history will be lost
For the residents:

They would continue to live as informal

settlers

Job opportunities would be hard to find

Tourism Program
Would help residents financially
Would help the city economically and physically

Tourism Now

Kalesa
Pedicabs

Tranvia

Tour Guides

Bambike Ecotour

Tourism Program
Framework
Officials and residents who want to participate would agree on
tour rates

Officials would handle the tours for legitimacy reasons

Residents who want to participate would be trained to speak in
English and to be tour guides

Kalinga Intramuros
Gawad

Kalinga
in
partnership with Intramuros
Administration
regarding
the relocation of informal
settlers

Resettlement
Kalinga Intramuros is
helping the Intramuros
Administration
relocate informal
settlers to Trece
Martires in Cavite

Resettlement
120

families
will
relocate while those
who will remain will
stay in a multi-level
GK
unit
in
Intramuros

Benefits
Having a home they can call their own would make them
aware of the things they do to the place especially if no
one would clean up after them
Having commercial spaces on the ground floor provides
job opportunities

Padyak/Bicycab Tours
Tour the city, all the little nooks
and crannies
Discover
hole-in-the-wall
places that you wont see in
history books
Be an adventurer

Framework

Pedicab drivers will be taught basic English

They will be trained on how to be "informal" tourist guides
Tour rates would be agreed on and fixed
Proper advertisement would be done to spread the word

Why would they cooperate?

They would benefit from it
financially
Tours would be handled by
officials making it safer for
tourists and thus trusting
the pedicab drivers as well

Fundraising for Pedicabs

An event organized by
students to help pedicab
drivers, financially, fix their
old bike and make it new
The first 20 pedicab drivers
who will sign up in the Padyak
Tours would have their bikes
restored

Conclusion
In order to rejuvenate the city, we must first start small, start
from the people
Addressing their needs would later on address the needs of the
city itself

What?
We must help informal settlers have their own home
and their own jobs--their own responsibility

How?

We start out small and show others the results

which would encourage them to participate as well

In the long run:

As tourism flourish with Padyak Tours (Bicycab Tours),
private businesses would be encouraged to open,
providing more jobs for the residents of Intramuros.
Consequently, we can attain a vibrant, thriving, and
sustainable
historical
and
cultural
hub
that
isINTRAMUROS.
