rise of capitalism .
Where did protestant come
from?
vProtestant Reformation:
vStarted by Martin Luther (1517-
1648)
vArgued that People could be saved
through faith alone.-led to
Lutheranism
Calvinism…

predestination- that individual
salvation was preordained by God.
What is Capitalism?
vAcc to wiki, Capitalism is an economic
and social system in which capital,
the non-labor factors of production is
privately controlled and profits
distributed to owners.
vIn other words Capitalism implies the
pursuit of forever renewable wealth.
What's the link between
Protestant teachings and
Capitalism?
vThe concept of “Calling” to worldly
activities.
vPeople have a duty to fulfil the
obligations imposed upon them by
their position in the world.
vIdea developed by Luther; states that
each legitimate calling has the same
worth to God.
Situation before
Reformation…
vPeople did not see their "worldly"
activities (such as their occupations
and businesses) as being in service
to God.
vBut the Reformation rejected this
attitude.
Changes after the
Reformation…
vReformation stated that participating
in worldly activities is a way of
serving God.
vThis was part of God’s purpose for
each individual.
vTherefore labor and business became
a way of serving God.
The four tenets of
Calvinism…
vGod is all powerful and transcendent.
you can never reach or understand
God.
vDoctrine of pre-destination: God has
already preselected who will be
saved and who shall be
condemened.
Cotd…
vDisworldly Asceticism : Do worldly
things but in a balanced manner.
Accumulated wealth but not to spend
luxuriously. In fact re-invest.
vThe notion of “calling” : that all people
have a calling. And to pursue this
calling means doing God will.
v
Calvinists believes..
vGod worked through man.
vThey were Gods tools.
vFaith had to be shown in objective
results.
vWhat were these results?
vGood work was a sign, not that they
were saved but are the chosen
ones.
v
The Spirit of Capitalism…
vthe spirit of Capitalism encourages
“Economizing” with high moral
significance.
vThe individual carries out capitalistic
economizing not only to earn a
livelihood but by carrying out such
activities, it would affirm his moral
worth.
