INPUT DEVICES

Input Output Devices

WHAT ARE INPUT DEVICES?

As the name suggests, input devices are hardware

devices that allow data to be entered into the computer. It
helps you communicate with the computer.
Many such devices exist, ranging from the more common
ones, such as keyboard, through to the more specialist devices
such as barcode readers.

Keyboard

Input Output Devices

The keyboard is the most common and

widely used input device.
It as an input device used to enter data into
the computer system.
At its essence, a keyboard is a series of
switches connected to a microprocessor that
monitors the state of each switch and initiates a
specific response to a change in that state.

Types of keyboards

Enhanced or extended keyboard

Laid out QWERTY format
Connected to computer by cable.

Cordless keyboard
Connected to keyboard wirelessly.
Usually uses Bluetooth technology.

Ergonomic keyboard
Designed to help Cumulative Traumatic Disorder (CTD)
Prevents damage to nerve tissue due for wrist due to
repeated motion.

Mouse
A mouse is an input devices that fits
comfortably under the palm of your hand.
A mouse is a pointing device.
We use mouse to control the movement of the
cursor on the screen and to make selections
from the screen.
The bottom of a mouse is flat and contains a
mechanism that detects the movement of a
mouse.

Scanner
A scanner is an input device that scans
documents such as photographs and pages of
text.
When a document is scanned, it is converted
into a digital format.
This creates an electronic version of the
document that can be viewed and edited on a
computer.

8
Input Output Devices

Two most common types of scanners: Flatbed Scanner The most popular.
Operate in a similar way to
photocopiers.
Most common size of
documents are of A4 size.

Handheld Handheld scanners are more

portable than flatbed.
Different sizes of document
can be scanned more readily
than flatbed scanners.

9
Input Output Devices

Optical Mark Recognition.

Optical mark recognition is the process of
automatically extracting data from noticeable
fields, such as checkboxes and fill-in the fields,
on printed forms.
Typically used to scan MCQ answer papers.
Also used to scan surveys, questionners,
votes.

Microphone
Microphones can be used to allow a computer to
convert sounds into data that it can handle.
A microphone allows you to record your voice to
the computer.
It also lets you speak to other people using
computers or even on the telephone.
A microphone is also called a mic.

12
Input Output Devices

Microphones can be used to add speech to number of

different applications like a presentation.
It also allows peoples speech to be translated into text.
Far easier to use then a keyboard.
Microphones can also be used to recognize a command.
Eg. :- Some cars now have voice activated systems to
switch on the lights, turn the radio volume etc.
Mobile phones also use the service of a microphone
for performing various functions.

Output Devices

An output device is any piece of computer

hardware equipment used to communicate the
results of data processing carried out by an
information processing system (such as a
computer) to the outside world.

14
Input Output Devices

Monitor
Monitor is a TV like device that display
information on screen.
It can display text as well as graphic images in
color or black & white while based on monitor
type.
Monitors are classified on the basis of color and
signals.
Screen output is referred to as soft copy.

Plotter
Plotters are similar to the computer
printers.
It is used to draw pictures on paper
based on commands from a computer.
Plotters differ from printers in that they
draw lines using a pen.
They can produce continuous lines.
Plotters are used in engineering
applications.
They are more expensive than printers.

Projector

Input Output Devices

A projector is a device that

enables an image, such as a
computer screen, to be
projected onto a flat surface.
These devices are commonly used in
meetings and presentations as they allow
for a large image to be shown so everyone
in a room can see.
