1. The purpose of parables.
Mathew 13: 10-17

The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in
parables? "He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven
has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he
will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken
from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not
see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the
prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be
ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they
might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and
turn, and I would heal them. 'But blessed are your eyes because they see, and
your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous
men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but
did not hear it.

Mathew 07: 15-23

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing,
but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them.
Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every
good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree
cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree
that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus,
by their fruit you will recognize them. "Not everyone who says to me,
'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the
will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day,
'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive
out demons and perform many miracles? 'Then I will tell them plainly, 'I
never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Mathew 23: 14-23
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows houses and
for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land
and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as
much a son of hell as you are. "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears
by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he
is bound by his oath. 'You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that
makes the gold sacred? You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing;
but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath. You blind men! Which
is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, he who swears
by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And he who swears by the temple
swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven swears by
God's throne and by the one who sits on it. Woe to you, teachers of the law and
Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-- mint, dill and cumin. But
you have neglected the more important matters of the law-- justice, mercy and
faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Jesus: His teachings about priorities

Mathew 16: 24-26

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come

after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross
and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will
lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What
good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet
forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange
for his soul?

Mathew 6: 25-34
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the
body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or
reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not
much more valuable than they?
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? "And why do you worry
about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I
tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If
that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is
thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do
not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we
wear? 'For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows
that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jesus: His teachings about religious events
Mathew 5: 17-24
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to
abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not
the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the
Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these
commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of
heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the
kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the
Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who
murders will be subject to judgment. 'But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his
brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, 'is
answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire
of hell. "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your
brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and
be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

Mathew 5: 25-30
"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it
while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge,
and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into
prison.
I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "You
have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery. 'But I tell you that anyone
who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his
heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown
into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to
him who knocks, the door will be opened.
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in
heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray

Jesus: His teachings about eternal life
Mathew 19: 16-23
Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must
I do to get eternal life?" "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus
replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey
the commandments. "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "'Do
not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false
testimony, honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as
yourself. "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still
lack?" Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your
possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away
sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell
you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
