Solar

Energy

Introduction

Radiant energy from

the sun is
specifically referred
to assolar energy.
The sun contains a
tremendous amount
of radiant energy
that produces
electromagnetic
waves.

These waves
travel away from
the sun through
space and
time.The further
away an object is
from a radiant
energy source,
the less energy it
will receive.

Conversion of Solar Energy into

Electrical Energy
Photovoltaics
- method of converting solar energy into direct current
electricity
using semiconducting materials that exhibit the
photovoltaic
effect.

Using Concentrated Solar Power

- generate solar power by using mirrors or lenses to
concentrate
a large area of sunlight onto a small area.

Photovoltaic System
Aphotovoltaic
system,
alsophotovoltaic power system,solar PV
system,PV systemor casuallysolar array
is
an
array
of
cells
containing
semiconductor materials that convert solar
radiation into direct current electricity. If a
solar PV system is connected to the power
grid, any excess electricity it produces is
fed into the grid and credited on the
customer's electricity account. When the
sun isn't shining, a PV system cannot
produce electricity; however, the grid will
supply additional electricity that is needed
to the connected system, as necessary.

How does it Works?

How does it Works?

Solar is a group of solar cells.

Solar panel is a group of solar cells (PV

cells.)
A PV cell is made from a thin disc of almost
pure silicon crystal called silicon wafer.

A small amount of boron is added. The boron

gives the crystal structure a positive electrical
characteristic. Since this part has a positive
characteristic it is referred to as a P type
silicon and it forms the base of the cell.
A thin layer of silicon crystal is formed over the
disc of P type silicon. This time a small
amount of phosphorous is added to the
mixture. The phosphorous mixture creates a
negative characteristic and thus is referred to
as an N type silicon.

How does it Works?

Light with energy greater than the

band gap energy of Si is absorbed
Energy is given to an electron in the
crystal lattice
The energy excites the electron; it is
free to move
A positive hole is left in the
electrons place
This separation of electrons and holes
creates a voltage and a current

Note: Solar cells produce

direct current (DC)
