VIEW OF VIZAG CITY

Why BRT in Vizag City ?

 THERE ARE ABOUT 4.5 LAKH (BY NOV 2007) REGISTERED

VEHICLES - 90% ARE CARS & TWO WHEELERS
 TRAVEL DEMAND OF 12 LAKH PASSENGER TRIPS PER DAY
 PRIVATE VEHICLES CONTRIBUTE TO 65% OF TRAVEL NEEDS
(7.8 LAKH TRIPS)
 TRAVEL DEMAND PROJECTED TO GROW TO 16 & 28 LAKH
TRIPS PER DAY BY 2011 AND 2021
 IN FUTURE ROAD CAPACITY WILL BE A CONSTRAINT
 TRANSPORT NETWORK WILL NOT ONLY REQUIRE EXPANSION
BUT WIDENING / STRENGTHENING, AS WELL ..
 ARREST THIS TREND AND PROMOTE PUBLIC TRANSPORT -
TARGET ABOUT 50% MODAL SPLIT BY 2011 (present share
below 20%)
 THEREFORE, PLANNING, DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A
HIGH CAPACITY PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IS A PRE-
Modification of
existing roads

Willingness to Shift to New System …
 MODE SURE (%) UNSURE (%)
 CAR 18 28
 2-WHEELER 21 32
 AUTO 54 19
 CYCLE 15 42
 CYC RICK 32 35
 RANGE (25 TO 40%)
 It is estimated that about 10% of Cars, Two
Wheeler and Cycle passengers will shift to
BRT
 Highest shift of passengers is likely to be
50% from auto rickshaw commuters –
current fares are higher than city bus
CONCLUSIO
N
 The Growth of the nation is dependant on
its transport system
 BRTS provides
 Savings in fuel consumption in terms of foreign
currency
 Safety to users
 Faster commutation
 Attraction of foreign tourists

 BRTS can be implemented under BOT system,

which reduces initial investment by
government

 Hence there is an urgent need to improve the

transport system and the only answer is BRTS
