Bushed Pin Type Flexible Coupling

Advantages:
It can tolerate 0.50 of angular
misalignment and 0.5 mm of
lateral or axial misalignment
It prevents transmission of
shocks from one shaft to
another
and
absorbs
vibrations
It is simple in construction
and easy to assemble and
dismantle
Disadvantages:
The cost of flexible coupling
is more than that of flange
coupling due to additional
parts

Design procedure of Bushed Pin type

Flexible Coupling
Shaft diameter:
Shaft diameter of coupling is calculated
considering torsional failure of the shaft:

J r

T * * d

Dimensions of Flanges:
Dimensions of flanges are calculated using following
empirical relations:
1. dh : Outside diameter ofdhub
h 2*d
2. l h : length of hub or effective length
lh 1of.5key
*d
3. D : Pitch circle diameter ofDpins
3 * d to 4 * d
4. t : thickness of output flange
t 0.5 * d
5. t1 : thickness of protective
t1 rim
0.25 * d
6. D1 : diameter of pin 0.5 * d

where, n is number of pins and d is the diameter

Checking the hub for torsional shear stress

induced:
The torsional shear stress in the hub can be
calculated by considering it as a hollow shaft
subjected to torsional moment
Torsinal shear stress
T in the hub is calculated

as:
J r

dh d
T * * (

The flange at the junction of the hub is

under shear while transmitting the torsional
moment.
The area under shear is (*dh*t)
Shear force = area * shear stress
= (*dh*t ) *
Resisting torque = Sheardforce * (dh/2)

Pin Dimensions
Number of pins is usually 4 or 6
Diameter of pin calculated by empirical

Bending stress in Pins:

The force P acting on each pin depends upon
the torque and relation is given as :
D
T P* *n

2 *T

The diameter of pin calculated using empirical

relation is sufficient to keep shear stresses
within limit but often not provide sufficient
cover against bending stresses
Hence it is better to calculate diameter using
failure and
bending

Brass lining ( 2mm thick) is
provided over the pin to
reduce friction.
Rubber bush is provided
over the brass lining. The

thickness

rubber bush is usually 10

Material Selection:
Shaft:
Subjected to torsional shear stress
On the basis of strength P.C.S. of grade 40C8
(Syt= 380 N/mm2) is used.
Factor of Safety = 2
Keys and Pins:
Keys are subjected to shear stress and
compressive stresses
Pins are subjected to shear and bending stresses
On the basis of strength P.C.S. of grade 30C8
(Syt= 400 N/mm2) is used.
Factor of Safety = 2
Assumption Syc=1.5 *Syt

Flanges:
Have complicated shape and economical method
to manufacture is casting
Subjected to torsional shear stress
On the basis of strength Grey Cast Iron of grade
FG 200 (Sut= 200 N/mm2) is used.
Factor of Safety = 6
Assumption Sus=0.5 *Sut since permissible
stresses is based on ultimate strength not on yield
strength
