INTRODUCTION
A process by which a computer takes a
speech signal and converts it into words.
Work best in particular applications
where a person is expected to be
speaking about a particular subject.
For example, booking a doctor's
appointment.

HISTORY
Radio Rex in the 1920s, was the first
success story in the field of speech
recognition.
1936 - AT & Ts Bell labs started study of
speech recognition (funded by DARPA).
1978 speak and spell toy released by
Texas Instruments.
1997 Dragon Systems produces first
continuous speech recognition product.

How Speech Recognition

evolved?
acoustic approach (pre - 1960s)

pattern recognition approach (1960s)

linguistic approach (1970s)

pragmatic approach (1980's)

WORKING
Speech recognition works on following
steps:Recognition
Training
Correction

Recognition

Training
Can be done by:
Predetermined text segments
Individual words

Compare new acoustic with old and combines

More training = better recognition

User specific Voice file

Voice qualities
Pronunciation
Patterns of word use
Preferred vocabulary

Corrections

Move cursor by voice command

Memorize edit commands
List of possible alternatives
Make correction manually

APPLICATIONS
In mobile phones as a speech recognizing
feature.
Teaching students of foreign languages to
pronounce vocabulary correctly.
Accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Cost reduction through automation.
In clinical purposes as a record keeper.
Military purposes in training of fighter aircraft.

CHALLENGES

Ease of use
Robust performance
Automatic learning of new words and
sounds
Grammar for spoken language
Control of synthesized voice quality
Integrated learning for speech
recognition and synthesis

FUTURE
SUI Speech-based User Interface
Improvements needed:
Greater accuracy.
Greater system control/command.
More compatible software.
