Evaluation of clinical practice

 Is it necessary?
 Why?
 Is there any goal?
 What?
 Any modification in intended?
 How ?
EVALUATION

 Theoretical knowledge
 Clinical practice
What is evaluation???
 The process of determining to what extent the
educational objectives are being realized.
-Ralph Tyler

 Evaluation in education signifies describing

something, in terms of selected attributes and
judging the degree of acceptability or suitability
of that which has been described.
- Encyclopedia of educational research
General principles

1. Determining and clarifying what is to be

evaluated
2. Techniques should be selected according to
the purposes to be served
3. Comprehensive evaluation with a variety of
techniques
4. They have limitations and strengths
5. Only a means to an end, not an end in itself.
Characteristics

 Continuous process
 Includes academic and non academic
subjects
 A procedure for improving the product
 Discovers the needs of an individual and
designing the learning experiences
 It is purpose oriented
EVALUATION OF CLINICAL
PRACTICE IN NURSING
 It is determined by the degree to which
students achieve desired behaviors for a
given nursing care.
 It must be logically consistent with, and
related to evaluation of the student’s
performance in related theory and non
patient care experiences.
 This area of evaluation becomes a part
of the total evaluation to determine the
effectiveness of the course in meeting
the desired objectives
 It is a continuous process of collecting
data, to be used as a basis for making a
judgment
PURPOSE OF EVALUATION
IN CLINICAL NURSING
 To determine the background ability
each student brings to the situation
 The progress by each student at
frequent intervals during the assessment
 The ability of students to use nursing
theory as a whole while progressing in
the development of clinical skills
 To discover learning difficulties of individual
students and the group in order to adjust the
teaching, including remedial or advanced
assignments as needed
 To provide reinforcement of learning for
students
 To foster development of self evaluation
 To determine the readiness of students to
become self directive
 To determine the effectiveness of
teaching techniques
 To obtain data for conducting research
studies relating to student achievement
EVALUATION PROCESS
ADAPTED FOR TEACHING
CLINICAL
 NURSING
What do you wish to evaluate?
 Why do you wish to evaluate certain
kinds of performance?
 Who should be involved in evaluation?
 When is evaluation most effective?
 How do you propose to accomplish the
evaluation?
 How do you intent to use the evaluation?
THE STEPS IN PROCESS

1. Stating the objectives for the given

clinical course (specific-behaviorally
defined)
- include the cognitive,conative,and
affective aspects of the desired
changes
- be realistic regarding clinical situations
allowing for flexibility in accord with
patients’ needs
- be consistent with the objectives for
related subject matter, total curriculum,
conditions of learning and educational
philosophy
- be attainable with in the time prescribed
for the given program
- be flexible enough to allow for
progression of individuals
2. Stating the specific changes to be
expected as outcomes of reaching each
objective
- key to success
- measurable
- evidence of behaviors sought by each
objective
7. Assigning criteria for measurement
8. Providing a learning environment
conducive for evaluation
9. Appraising data to determine total
progress of students
10. Interpreting student progress as
revealed by data
3. Describing learning experiences that
include desired behaviors.
4. Providing adequate sampling of
experiences including desired behaviors
5. Selecting methods of evaluation
appropriate to the desired behaviors
6. Selecting evaluation devices in accord
with established criteria
TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

 OBSERVATION TECHNIQUES AND

TOOLS
- principal means of evaluation
INFLUENCES ON TEACHER’S
OBSERVATION
 Teacher’s background
 Experiences
 Abilities
 Attitudes
 Communication skills
Constructive use of observations
should result in
 Seeing relationships among various
kinds of data
 Recognizing the significances of
observed behaviors
 Recording and interpreting only on that
which is observable in a given situation
