BLACK OUT

(Total break down)

Prime considerations of
plant
safety and parameters.

island operation
Monitoring of Key
parameters
during
island operation.

Procedure of feed back

for other unit auxiliaries.

BLACK OUT

All the Unit trips at BQPS that means

total electrical supply failure and no
backup supply from system and other
sources are available
Station outgoing feeder high voltage
lines circuit breakers are open
Station D.C system available and in

Plant Safety
Considerations
Turbine lube oil system
Hydrogen Seal Oil System
RAH and GRF rotation
Condenser pressure
monitoring

Plant SAFETY
CONSIDERATIONS
.We have to protect each equipment at plant
specially Check all running of D.C operated
emergency back up auxiliaries, such as DC
H2 seal oil pump, DC turbine lube oil
pumps
Drain steam lines against water hammering
Note: Confirmation from local is must
Manager operation should himself
check the oil flow from sight glasses and
turbine and RAH turning

Sharing the
responsibilities

Each staff and officer of operation

should clearly know their
responsibility and action to do
through emergency operation SOPs
during black out .review and discuss
emergency SOPS in normal
environment for clarification.
Proper communication among
operation staff and officers play a
vital role, Set all communication

Prime considerations in
Black out

start the unit auxiliaries by starting

Diesel Engine Generator (DEG) as per
SOP
Energize Emergency bus bars ABCA /
ABCB
Energize units 6.6 KV aux bus
BBE/BBF
Energize lighting transformers
Change over DC driven pumps to A.C
Energize Battery chargers of 24

IS LAND OPERATION

IS LAND OPERATION
The term Is land operation is used
due to the similarity of same
scenario faced at any Is land in the
ocean, where you have to survived
with out the assistance of rest of the
world and depends on the facilities
available at Is Land for living till the
assistance received from rest of the
world .
I

General Note
In general as per protection logic
units at BQPS1 were not facilitate to
re-synchronized with network after
attaining Is land conditions on dead
bus bar.
Unit no 5 and 6 are now made
available by E/M after modification in
logic, SOP is developed with the
consultation with E/M
which must be reviewed periodically
during normal conditions by
operation staff and officers

This operation is recommended

only for restoration of emergency
essential auxiliaries of the units
because unit on Island may become
unstable upon starting of any 6.6 KV
auxiliaries.
After the synchronization with
national grid unit start up activities
may be started.

Is Land Operation

MONITORING OF
KEY PARAMETERS
DURING IS LAND
OPERATION

Is Land Operation

NCR staff
Case A
Note any protection relays and alarm
operated on protection panel
Coordinate control to stabilized the
system frequency and voltage.
HITAS selector reset to auto or
manual(U1256)
Re synchronized the unit on Is Land.

Actions required to stabilized

the unit
Case
A or
B
during
Is Land
operation
Boiler operator
Maintained Fuel oil / gas burner inlet
pr to safe value, Upper Six burner will
cut off as per logic.
Maintained Boiler drum level, put
control on manual if required.
Control Main steam temperature well
above tripping value(re-ignite upper

Turbine Operator.
Observe CV and CRV position and load
variation.
Maintained RH pressure to around 8 bar to
avoid reverse power protection.
Check HP and LP bypass operation, put
control on manual if required, coordinate
with boiler operator regarding drum level
Check and control
HP Heater and LP
Heater level control
from local, open
bypass valve from local if required.

Is Land Operation

NCR
In case of KESC total supply failure
and Units 5 or 6 or both have safe
isolation on ISLAND mode, following
steps will be taken for their safe resynchronization on 220 KV GIS Dead
Bus Bar.

All indications and protection relays

operated on the Units, 220 KV lines
and station transformers at BQPS
end will be recorded and
communicated to LDC as early as
possible.
The status of 220 KV Circuit Breakers
(OPEN or CLOSE) of O/H lines, units
and startup transformers should be
physically checked, noted open as

It should be ensure that all tripped

unit auxiliary Transformers Main In
feed Breakers (11BBE 61 BBE /
11BBF 61BBF) should be in OFF
position

6 .After ensuring clearance of

the bus bar ,unit 5 or 6 generator
circuit
breaker will be closed on 220 KV
Dead Bus as follows

At UNIT 6
Syn.circuit off
Syn.key on manual
P.B (main release) press down on
control panel. Unit 6 will
synchronized on dead bus bar.

At UNIT 5
Syn. Circuit OFF
Syn.Circuit.Key set on Manual (6.6
kv syn.key to be insert) at unit 5
P.B press down ( provided for the
purpose at unit 5),unit no.5 will
synchronized on dead bus bar.

6.6 KV bus bar A3BCA/A3BCB should

preferably be energized either on
auto(depending upon the c/o selector
position) or manual in order to energize
essential auxiliaries of the unit on ISLAND .
First try to energize the emergency bus
bar (A1BCA-A2BCA/A1BCB-A2BCB) from
the unit on Island operation ,upon failing
to do so then allow to synchronize from
any DEG on emergency bus bar .DEGs
may be started for standby with breaker
open.

Actions required to
stabilized the unit during Is Land
operation

Case A or B
Boiler operator
Maintained Fuel burner inlet pr to
safe value, Six burner will cut off as
per logic.
Maintained Boiler drum level, put
control on manual if required.
Control Main steam temperature well

Turbine Operator.
Observe CV and CRV position and load
variation.
Maintained RH pressure to around 8 bar to
avoid reverse power protection.
Check HP and LP bypass operation, put
control on manual if required, coordinate
with boiler operator regarding drum level
Check and control
HP Heater and LP
Heater level control
from local, open
bypass valve from local if required.

Actions required at
the units which are
not facing Is Land
operation in case B
total break down

BOILER SIDE
After loss of auxiliary electric power
confirm that RAH is rotating on air motor.
Open Air Heater bypass gas damper and
close Air Heaters inlet gas dampers. If air
supply of RAH drive is lost, rotate Air
Heaters by manual handle operation
(ensure motor breaker racked out)
Open FDF inlet vanes & outlet dampers
for natural draft purging for at least 20
minutes
When auxiliary power is available, put
Air Heaters on electric drive. Close boiler

Turbine Side

Check that turbine emergency lube oil pump

and DC seal oil pump for Generator have
started.(check on local)
Open condenser vacuum breaker and cut off
condenser gland steam system as per
procedure
When AC auxiliary power is available, carry out
following operations:
Start TOP, JOP, Put turbine on turning gear .
Start open & close cooling system pump
Start Generator seal oil pump, Vacuum pp of H2
seal system(U12 &56)
Turbine oil tank vapors extractor

Back Feed Line u

Is Land condition
Case B
Energize without delay, the 6.6 KV
emergency bus A3BCA / A3BCB from the
unit which is on Is land operation to ensure
instrument air compressor supply.
When unit on Is land is established and
A3BCA/B fed from unit supply, confirm
opening of 6.6 KV breakers of start up 1
and 2

Energize manually the other start up

emergency bus A2BCA/B and
A1BCA /B by closing the tie breakers
Similarly energize BBE/BBF bus bar
by closing coupling breakers and
energize 400 V busses and D.C
chargers at each unit
Coordinate with control for back feed
from system

Total Break Down

Ask control for back feed from any
feeder
Check the system voltage on the
feeder from which control provide
back feed
Close 220 KV breaker of start up
ABCT
Check the 6.6 KV voltage at ABCA/B
Synchronize the back feed supply
from DEGs if running.
