Composition 1 My Music

Intended Outcome

To understand the requirements for

Composition 1 My Music and begin
planning my own composition

How much do you know?

How much do you know about your
own instrument?
Tell the person next to you:
- The range of your instrument (the
highest and lowest notes possible)
- What is it made of?
- How is the sound produced?
- Any instrument specific techniques, i.e.
bends (guitar)

My Music
My Music is your composition for AoS1,
and is for your instrument
It must use the instrument you played
in your performance 1 (solo)
You can use other instruments but you
dont have to, and your instrument
should play the main part

My Music
For this composition, you must write a short
brief
A brief is a write-up of your plans for the
composition
It is linked to the commentary you did for
performance 1 the final paragraph of
your commentary will become your brief for
composition 1

Writing a brief
Composition Brief
1. The type of piece youll be composing
(style/genre), i.e. pop song
2. The instrument youll be using should be the
instrument you used in performance 1
3. Musical techniques and ideas you intend to use
4. Clear details of how your composition will link to
your performance 1

Example brief
Brief
To compose a jazz study for solo clarinet using musical
features from Eleanor Rigby, arranged for clarinet with piano
accompaniment.
Use the structure of Eleanor Rigby introduce an original
tune then develop variations on it before returning to the
initial melody for the final section
Adapt the melancholy mood of Eleanor Rigby but keep the
rhythmic features of variation 2 use syncopated rhythms,
swung quavers and offbeat accents to create a more
upbeat, jazzy mood to show off the range of styles of the
clarinet.
Use the dynamic arch shape of Eleanor Rigby by using
increasingly louder dynamics though variation 1 and 2, then
getting quieter in the final section.
