TAYLORISM
Scientific Management Theory
Work Scientific Organization
Science + group harmony

TAYLORISM
Workers as parts of a machine
Different parts assigned specific tasks
Parts + few breaks as possible + part replaced if it
slows down = Efficiency in manufacturing

TAYLORISM

Task decomposed in elementary operations

Workers selected and trained - the best rhythm

possible
Salary - differentiated rates system, performance
COORDINATION

TIME AND MOTION STUDY

What is it?

TIME AND MOTION STUDY

Work simplification +
standards + wage incentive system = worker
motivation

Motivated workers = increased operational efficiency

TIME AND MOTION STUDY

Complex task simplified
Movements by workers observed
Correct movement measured

The Scientific management

method

Described how scientific method could greatly

improve productivity.

It optimize the way that task were performed

simplifies the job enough so that workers could

perform in their best way.

4 Principle of Scientific Management

Method
1. Replace working by "rule of thumb
2. match workers to their jobs based on capability
and motivation
3. Monitor worker performance, and provide
instructions and supervision
4. Allocate the work between managers and
workers

Drawbacks of Scientific Management

Method
Increased monotomy of work
The core job dimensions of skill were missing
Some workers didnt accept the method

Soldiering or Natural Laziness

3 Causes of Soldiering
1. Workers think that more productive=fewer of
them needed
2. Non-incentive wage system encourage low
productivity
3. Workers rely on work of thumb
