Background

CD introduced in 1980 -A giant leap in data storage and

premium quality for prime audio applications
Need for a 5-10x storage capacity increase for data
applications demanded use of DVDs
Seamless migration and full backward compatibility
Advent of Blu-ray Technology:25Gb and 50 Gb Storage
Highest application of Optical media
Interactive and Highest Quality Standards
Introduction

Blu Ray is the name of a next-generation

optical disc
Jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc
Association (BDA)
Developed to enable recording, rewriting and
playback of high-definition video (HD)
Offers more than five times the storage
capacity of traditional DVDs
Technology

The new format uses a blue-violet laser instead,

hence the name Blu-ray, unlike the current optical
disc technologies that rely on red lasers.
Shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm),
which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with
even greater precision
Efficient data storage with a numerical aperture of
0.85
Improvements in data encoding
Hard Coating: Durabis,Scratchguards
Advantages

Pristine Picture: 6x resolution of DVD

Superior Sound: 7.1 channel lossless audio
Unrivaled storage Capacity
Compatibility
Advanced Durability
Digital rights management
(DRM)
The Blu-ray Disc format employs several layers of
Digital rights management.
AACS Standards
BD+ was developed by CRI and is based on their
concept of Self-Protecting Digital Content.
Effectively a small virtual machine embedded in
authorized players. It allows content providers to
include executable programs on Blu-ray Discs
Contd..

Examine the host environment, to see if the

player has been tampered with.
Verify that the player's keys have not been
changed.
Execute native code, possibly to patch an
otherwise insecure system.
Transform the audio and video output. Parts
of the content will not be viewable without
letting the BD+-program unscramble it.
Replication

BD-ROM Mark is a small amount of

cryptographical data that is stored physically
differently from normal Blu-ray Disc data.
Bit-by-bit copies that do not replicate the BD-
ROM Mark are impossible to decode.
A specially licensed piece of hardware is
required to insert the ROM-mark into the
media during replication.
DVD vs Blu-Ray
FAQs
Why the name blu-ray?
The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-
violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). The
correct abbreviation is BD, not BR or BRD
(wrong abbreviation)
FAQs:
Who developed Blu-ray?
Developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association
(BDA), a group of 170 leading consumer
electronics. BODs consist of stalwarts like
Apple, Dell, HP, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Walt
Disney, Warner Bros,
FAQs:
What are the Blu-ray formats?
BD-ROM - read-only format for distribution of
HD movies, games, software, etc.
BD-R - recordable format for HD video
recording and PC data storage.
BD-RE - rewritable format for HD video
recording and PC data storage.
FAQs:
How much data can you fit on a Blu-ray disc?
A single-layer disc can hold 25GB.
A dual-layer disc can hold 50GB.
To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily
extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for
multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage
capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per
layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to
the discs.
FAQs:
How much video can you fit on a Blu-ray
disc?
Over 9 hours of high-definition (HD) video on
a 50GB disc.
About 23 hours of standard-definition (SD)
video on a 50GB disc.
FAQs:
How fast can you read/write data on a
Blu-ray disc?
According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x
speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-
ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data
transfer rate the minimum speed expected is
2x (72Mbps)
FAQs:
What video codecs will Blu-ray support?
MPEG-2 - enhanced for HD, also used for
playback of DVDs and HDTV recordings.
MPEG-4 AVC - part of the MPEG-4 standard
also known as H.264 (High Profile and Main
Profile).
FAQs:
What audio codecs will Blu-ray support?
Dolby Digital (DD) - format used for DVDs,
5.1-channel surround sound. (mandatory)
DTS Digital Surround - format used for DVDs,
5.1-channel surround sound. (mandatory)
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio - extension of
DTS, 7.1-channel surround sound. (optional)
FAQs:
Will Blu-ray require an Internet
connection?
No, you will not need an Internet connection
for basic playback of Blu-ray movies.
Internet connection will only be needed for
value-added features such as downloading
new extras, watching recent movie trailers,
web browsing, and authorization.
FAQs:
What will Blu-ray products cost?
As with any new technology the first
generation of products will likely be quite
expensive due to low production volumes.
TDK:25 GB BD-R (4x)and BD-RE (2x)media @
$8.99 and $12.99 respectively
Samsung :BD-P1000, retailing for $1000 USD
Latest Advancements
Quad-layer (100 GB) discs
A High Definition optical disc process that
extends the disc capacity of both competing
formats to 10 layers has also been developed
BD9 / Mini-Blu-ray Disc- Cost effective
alternative
