 Basic design and technology of the standard
Heat Treatment Console has not changed
since the mid 1970’s
 Largest design improvement to date had
been the move from Dial-a-Pak Controllers to
Universal Display (UDC) Controllers
 Standard technology continues to utilize
graphical 12 or 24 point strip chart recorders
allowing for only one continuous heat cycle
per machine
 Many of the standard consoles still being
manufactured and used today continue to
allow for only 75 volt output, resulting in
severe line loss issues and the necessity to
double-stack heaters in order to make
temperature

281 Furmanite Confidential - 1/9/04

 UDC Controllers and Strip Chart Recorders
are replaced with Programmable Logic
Controllers (PLC) and SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition) Software
 System is driven by interchangeable
computer laptops that stores time and
temperature information in encrypted form
 In the unlikely event of a laptop failure, the
console hardware allows for any heat cycle
program to be completed manually and the
built in memory will store the cycle
information for up to four- (4) days
 At the end of each shift, the heat cycle
information is backed up onto a flash drive
and then cataloged for retention
 85 volt output, resulting in less equipment
requirements than many other competitors

282 Furmanite Confidential - 1/9/04

 Manual Dial-a-Pak or UDC
Controllers; may have a set-point
programmer that will run
automatically but requires
programmed zones to run the
same cycle at the same time

 Single laptop control is equipped to run 5 independent 6-

Zone Consoles simultaneously, each console capable of
having 6 independent heat cycles with 6 different start
times and programs; i.e. 30 independent heat cycles can be
monitored at one time from a single point
283 Furmanite Confidential - 1/9/04
 Potentiometric 12 or 24 Point
graphical Time & Temperature
Recorder, capable of running a
single copy of a single chart at
one time; stores no copies

 Laptop control electronically creates encrypted Time &

Temperature charts capable of running multiple cycles
simultaneously and separating out up to 30 independent
thermocouples; stores an infinite number of copies

284 Furmanite Confidential - 1/9/04

 Controllers and the fear of over-temp or
heater burn-out require that a
technician constantly watch over the
Time & Temperature chart, remaining
there unproductive during the entire
heat cycle

 Laptop control can be run wirelessly and remotely; with built in

alarms for any heat cycle deviation, including over temp and
heater burn-out, and the ability for a single tech/station to monitor
up to 5 consoles at once, additional workforce can be dismissed
or dispatched to more productive functions
285 Furmanite Confidential - 1/9/04
 Furmanite continues to make
design and technology
improvements to benefit our
customers
 Our newest design takes
advantage of the reduction of
internal components created by
the technology advances and
reduces the overall footprint of a
single console to 25” x 24” x 35”
35”  The smaller footprint allows us to
use consoles in constricted areas
that were otherwise unachievable
with traditional equipment and
further reduces the overall
required equipment area in large
projects or turnarounds where
real estate is at a premium
 All new 6-Zone consoles being
manufactured incorporate this
new design
