WHAT IS HYBRID CHIMENY?

Hybrid chimney is a modified version of basic chimneys that is based on
Seeback generator effect which are devices that convert heat (temperature
differences) directly into electrical energy, using a phenomenon called the
Seeback effect

"Hybrid Chimney" is an Industry oriented project that is based on

thermodynamic application for utilization of waste heat generated in
the boilers and chimneys.

Introduction
A lot of heat is generated from the chimneys in industries like the ones
where brick making industry. In general, the heat is wasted form these
chimneys.
Our idea is to utilize the waste heat to make a generator that could operate
the lights inside the industry directly from this heat source.

Importance
This system is of great importance in industrial applications where blast
furnaces are installed.
We are going to design a hybrid chimney that could generate electricity
directly from the hot surface of the walls of chimney or furnace.
This hybrid chimney will be able to operate a dc device as well as an AC
appliance lie a light bulb with an efficient heat sink design and
thermodynamic application.

SEEBACK
EFFECT
Seebeck Effect: In TEGs, thermoelectric materials are packed between
the hot-side and the cold-side heat exchangers. The thermoelectric
materials are made up of p-type and n-type semiconductors, while the heat
exchangers are metal plates with high thermal conductivity. The complete
Thermo Electric Generator would be based on Seebeck Effect that is
reverse of peltier effect. The thermoelectric effect is the direct conversion
of temperature differences
to
electric voltage and
vice-versa.
A
thermoelectric device creates a voltage when there is a different
temperature on each side. Conversely, when a voltage is applied to it, it
creates a temperature difference. A unique aspect of thermoelectric energy
conversion is that the direction of energy flow is reversible. In this
configuration, the reversed energy-conversion process of thermoelectric
devices is invoked, using electrical power to pump heat and
produce refrigeration. This reversibility distinguishes thermoelectric
energy converters from many other conversion systems, such
as thermionic power converters. Electrical input power can be directly
converted to pumped thermal power for heating or refrigerating, or
thermal input power can be converted directly to electrical power for
lighting, operating electrical equipment, and other work.

Hybrid Chimney:

MATERIAL REQUIRED
1. Sheet metal for making chimney design
2. Heat Sink
3. Heat sink compound and Thermal paste (Adhesives) to mount peltier
element on heat sink.
4. Base container 9Aluminium) for setup of the generator
5. Clamps to mount heat sink on base plates
6. Support shafts to provide height to heat sink (Aluminium)
7. Other tools and equipments: Nut-bolt pairs, screwdrivers, multimeters,
Drillling machine, lathe machine, surface grinding machine
8. Output devices, load to show the generated electricity.
9. Peltier Plates (TEC-12706), operating voltage: 12V, size: 4 x 4 cm,
thickness : 5mm

A thermoelectric circuit composed of materials of

different Seeback coefficient (p-doped and ndoped semiconductors), configured as a
thermoelectric generator. If the load resistor at the
bottom is replaced with a voltmeter the circuit
then functions as a temperature-sensing
thermocouple.

ADVANTAGES OVER EXISTING

TECHNOLOGY
No moving parts. Therefore they require little or no maintenance.
Enables reduced, low-noise operation of cooling fans.
Suitable for manufacture in very small sizes. Therefore ideal for
microelectronics.
Lightweight.
Long life. Exceeds 200,000 hrs MTBF (Mean Time Between
Failures).
Controllable (by voltage / current).
Small size.
Fast, dynamic response.
Enhanced ratio between heat sink and target element.

APPLICATIONS
AUTOMOTIVE THERMO ELECTRIC GENERATORAn attempt to harvest the waste heat energy produced by the car
engine. Thus, electricity produced can be used in the car to- glow car indicators
- run music system
- charge batteries
SOLAR CELLSSolar cells use only the high frequency part of the radiation,
while the low frequency heat energy is wasted. Several patents
about the use of thermoelectric devices in tandem with solar cells
have been filed. The idea is to increase the efficiency of the
combined solar/thermoelectric system to convert the solar
radiation into useful electricity.

Recently Liu Liping of Rutgers University has come out with a

research paper on the Feasibility of large scale power plants
based on Thermoelectric effect the paper was published in
New Journal of Physics on 8 December 2014. In this paper
Liping describes how the temperature difference between the
surface water of sea and the colder bottom of the sea can be
utilized to generate electric power on a large scale. He argues
that the generated electricity would be very cheap and
affordable
