What is Oculeics ?
Oculeics is a technical
term for Eye contact
How and how much do
we look at others while
communicating.

Eye contact as
Eye contact can signal that;
signal :
You are paying attention;
You respect the person you are
speaking with;
As well as variety of different
emotions

Example
When your lecturer sees the
most of his student are not
looking at him, he might
conclude that you are not
paying attention.
Or
If your friend share
something with you in
confidence, your friend may
glare at you to signal your
transgression.

Eye behaviors with emotional


summaries
Eyes up- Different people look
up for different reasons. Some
look up when they are thinking.

Eyes down- Avoiding


eye contact, or looking
down, can be a sign of
submission or fear.

Winking- Winking can


indicate that two people
understand something without
using words.

Closing of eyes- Closing the


eyes serves to shut out the
world. Some may close their
eyes as a way to think more
sincerely about a particular
subject.

Glancing- Glancing
can show a person's
true desires. For
instance, glancing at a
door might mean that
someone wants to
leave.
Staring- Prolonged eye
contact can be
aggressive, affectionate,
or deceptive.

The 3 Rules Of Eye Contact


1. Etiquette
Eye contact with a
business associate.
To maintain a
professional contact,
keep your eyes in the
middle of that triangle
when speaking to
others.

2. Eye contact in a personal


relationship
If you know the other person on
a personal level, invert the
triangle so that its peak is now
at their mouth.

3. Eye contact with


controlled blinking.
We tend to blink more when we
are under stress.
In a business environment, you
need to learn how to monitor
your own eye contact and
movements, as these messages
are the most expressive of all
nonverbal messages.

What is considered as appropriate Eye


contact ?
Studies show that in Western cultures, talkers hold
eye contact about 40% of the time and listeners
nearly 70% of the time (Knapp & Hall,2006)
In western culture people also maintain more eye
contact when discussing topic their comfortable with.
If the topic is uncomfortable to discuss, they tend
to avoid eye contact.

A majority of people in the U.S & other Western


culture expect those with whom they are
communicating to look them in the eyes. But, direct
eye contact is not universally considered appropriate
(samovar, Porter, & McDaniel, 2009)
Japan for instance, prolonged eye contact considered
rude, disrespectful, and threatening. Similarly in China
and Indonesia too much of direct eye is a sign of bad
manners.

Middle Eastern countries, people tend to use


continuous and direct eye contact with others to show
keen interest.
Native Americans tend to avoid eye contact with
superiors as a sign of respect for their authority.
Woman tend to use more eye contact during
conversations then men do (wood, 2007)
