My Career Choices

Petroleum Engineering
Astronomer
Aerospace Engineer

Petroleum products are the life's blood of a modern economy.

They provide the fuel that makes rapid transportation possible,
agricultural chemicals that produce larger crops, and many of
the plastics that manufacturing depends upon. Petroleum
engineers play several key roles in the extraction and
production of oil and gas from underground reservoirs. It's a
responsible position, and one that's well-compensated.

Petroleum Engineering
Most employers require only a Bachelors Degree
Job Training: Employees in these occupations usually need

several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training,

and/or vocational training.
Related Experience: A considerable amount of work-related skill,
knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For
example, an accountant must complete four years of college and
work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.

Work Activities

Getting Information Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant
sources.
Interacting With Computers Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and
software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
Making Decisions and Solving Problems Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the
best solution and solve problems.
Analyzing Data or Information Identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information
by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates Providing information to supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.

Major Job Tasks

Assess costs and estimate the production capabilities and economic value of oil and gas

wells, in order to evaluate the economic viability of potential drilling sites.

Monitor production rates, and plan rework processes in order to improve production.
Analyze data in order to recommend placement of wells and supplementary processes to
enhance production.
Specify and supervise well modification and stimulation programs, in order to maximize
oil and gas recovery.
Direct and monitor the completion and evaluation of wells, well testing, and well surveys.
Assist engineering and other personnel to solve operating problems.
Develop plans for oil and gas field drilling, and for product recovery and treatment.

Income and Outlook

Petroleum engineers work in a profitable, high-stakes industry and are

paid accordingly. The median income for a petroleum engineer in the

Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2011 figures was $122,280 per year.
The lowest-earning 25 percent made up to $92,170 per year, and the
highest-earning 25 percent reported incomes of $172,040 or more. The
bureau projects 17 percent growth in employment for petroleum
engineers between 2010 and 2020, slightly higher than the average for
all occupations. Growth will come from expansion within the petroleum
industry, as well as retirement among older petroleum engineers.

For me, I am driven

by two main
philosophies: know
more today about
the world than I
knew yesterday and
lessen the suffering
of others. You'd be
surprised how far
that gets you.

Astronomy

Astronomy is a broad field of study . It is most commonly divided up into

these disciplines: Astronomy and Astrophysics; Astrophysics; Planetary
Astronomy and Science
To become an astronomer of any sort, one must obtain at least a masters
in one of the above disciplines, but a doctoral degree offers has a higher
percentage of respondents.
To work as a full time astronomer you may need some on-the-job training,
but most of these occupations assume that youwill already have the
required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.

Major Job Tasks

1. Prepare scientific or technical reports or presentations: As an astronomer you will

have to generate and organize your findings into reports that can be read,
verified, and credited by the scientific community
2. Provide technical information or assistance to public: As an astronomer you will
have to provide the technical information of your findings to your fellow scientific
scholars and you will also have to provide a less technical version for the public
3. Direct scientific activates: This is broad, but these scientific activates include, and
center around the scientific experimental method.
4. Collaborate on research activities with scientists or technical specialists
5. Develop theories or models of physical phenomena

Earnings and Job Outlook

Why that career would be the right

career for you?

Astronomy, and more specifically, Astrophysics combined all my interests

in math and science because my brain, for some reason, likes small units
in a system and how manipulating them affects the whole system as a
whole. In astronomy; plants, solar systems, galaxies, and even the whole
universe are some subunits of what we call reality and relative to their
upper units they are minuscule, yet play a major role.
It requires a lot of STEM learning, and I LOVE to learn.
Great pay and hours
Only downsides job outlook

Why that career would be the right

career for you?
This is a great career for me to pursue because its on that

requires problem solving skills.

It also contains three areas of my interest: math, engineering,
geology; while also being very lucrative and jobs are
relatively available

Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering is largely about artifacts that fly airplanes,

rockets, satellites, missiles, etc.

It is also about how fluids flow (think about how air flows around a car),
about control systems, and about how strong things are (and how to
make them strong). Aerospace engineering also deals with how to
design things so that they can be reliably built and maintained.
Education requirements: A bachelor's degree in aeronautical or
aerospace engineering is usually required, although some employers
may accept an equivalent degree in a related field

Work Activates and Job Tasks

applying the principles of science and technology to create aircraft, components and support
equipment;
researching and developing design specifications;
undertaking systematic manufacturing, involving the assembly and modification of components;
supervising the assembly of airframes and the installation of engines, instruments and other
equipment;
participating in flight test programs to measure take-off distances, rate of climb, stall speeds,
maneuverability and landing capacities;
resolving issues that arise during the design, development and testing processes;
maintaining aircraft for full operation including making regular inspections, maintenance and
servicing

Earnings
and Job
Outlook
Pay: The median annual wage for aerospace engineers was

$103,720 in May 2012.

Job Outlook: Employment of aerospace engineers is
projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than
the average for all occupations. Some aerospace engineers
work on projects that are related to national defense and thus
require security clearances. This requirement will help to keep
jobs in the United Stat

Why that career would be the right

career for you?

Challenging Work:
Through engineering you will never run short of a new challenge. Engineers are
constantly faced with having to adapt solutions and change technology to move
with trends, needs and the environment. They have to often come up with ideas
that no one else has thought and get to make a big impression on the world!
Greater understanding of how things work
As an engineer I will gain a great insight into how things work, whether it is how
planes manage to stay in the air or how we get energy from tidal power Ill learn
more about our environment than I wouldve in many other job roles.

What did you learn about yourself

while researching possible career
choices?
Ive learned that I have many choices ahead of me, and that I

can become whatever I want if I work hard enough and

succeed in college.
I also learned that I have a lot of passions, but I must pick a
career path that will be interesting, but I also have to take
economic aspects into account.
