UMTS Protocol Stack

n sublayer of layer 2 (Data Link Layer) in UMTS Protocol Stack. RLC Operate on logical and transport
ls in both the control plane and the user plane . It Provides services to the RRC layer in the control
and the application layer in user plane. Also RLC Supports three data transfer modes:
(Transparent Mode)
(Unacknowledged Mode)
Acknowledged Mode)
mode performs some or all of the functions listed for RLC, depending on the requirements of the mode
see next slide for detailing mode function

RLC Simple Concept(2)

RLC Typical functions:
- Segmentation, reassembly, concatenation and padding
- Retransmission control, flow control
- Duplicate detection, in sequence delivery
- Error correction
- Chipering
The primary function of RLC is to transfer user data and signaling between the upper
layers and the MAC layers. Data is transferred into the RLC in data blocks called Service
Data Units (SDU). Data is transferred
Out of the RLC in data blocks called Protocol Data Units (PDU)
Three data transfer mode are defined:
- TM (Transparent Mode)
- PDUs are transferred with no additional header information.
- Use for unreliable services, separate between receive and transmit entities
- Support a set of fixed length SDU sizes
- UM (Unacknowledged Mode)
- A header containing length and sequence number fields are added to the PDU before it is
transmitted.
- Use for unreliable services, separate between receive and transmit entities
- Support arbitrary (not fixed) SDU Sizes
- AM (Acknowledged Mode)
- PDUs are delivered according to a bidirectional protocol that includes in-sequence
delivery, flow control,
error detection, and duplicate detection.
- Use for reliable services, and bidirectional entities (not separate between transmit and
receive)
Page 5
- Support arbitrary (not fixed) SDU Sizes

RLC Simple Concept(3)

- Data flow to and from the upper layers are called Radio Bearers and may carry either
signaling data (Signaling Radio Bearers) SRB or user data (Radio Access Bearers) RAB
- Data flow to and from the MAC are called Logical Channels.

e RLC most important parameter
Discard Mode : Defines the behavior for unacknowledged PDUs
Dat : Maximum number of PDU retransmissions before a RLC Reset is triggered
r RST : Reset timer for RLC resets
RST : MaxRST defines the maximum number of RLC RESET PDUs retransmissions
