History

On January 26, 1871 the Rugby

Football Union was Founded.
Following the founding of the Rugby
Football Union, a committee was
formed consisting of three ex-Rugby
School pupils who were invited to
formulate a set of laws to help
govern and unify the game.
By June 1871 they had accomplished
their task.

History
Soon after, the Scottish members of
the Union challenged the English to a
match. This was by all accounts the
first international match between
England and Scotland, perhaps
between anyone.
The match took place at Raeburn
Place in Edinburgh on March 27,
1871, resulting in a win to Scotland.

History
In August of 1995, the game of rugby
went professional all over the globe.
Rugby has become a well known
game all over the world thanks to the
legend of William Webb Ellis.

Rules
Scoring is done in one of 5 ways.
- Try
- Penalty Try
- Conversion Goal
- Penalty
- Dropped Goal

Rules
Their are no downs, no 10 yards to get, the game
is continuous. The play does not stop when the
ball hits the ground it is fair game. Passing is
allowed but it must either be done laterally or
backwards, forward passing is not allowed.
However any player may kick the ball at any
time, and once the ball has been kicked it is up
for grabs from either side. Players often use this
method to get the ball down field to team mates.
Players may also run the ball until 1 of 2 things
happen either they are tackled or they step out of
bounds.
When a player steps out of bounds it is brought
back into play by a method called "line out", both
teams line up 1 meter from each other in parallel
lines and a player from the side that didn't put
the ball out of play throws it in a straight line

Rules
When a player is tackled the other method
of bringing the ball back into play is called
"scrum", this is done by each team
forming a tunnel and the ball is placed in
between them, each side must battle for
the ball against the other teams line until
a player is able to push the ball backwards
with his feet to his teammates behind him
in the "tunnel". If you've been thinking this
sounds a lot like American football, well it
is, it was the forerunner to the American
Football's "line of scrimmage".

Skills
Catching-

Make a target. Your hands should be at chest height, with

your thumbs up and fingers spread. Watch the ball into your hands.

Passing-

Sight your target. Draw the ball back across one hip,
keeping your elbows slightly bent, as you turn your chest away from the
target. Sweep the ball off your hip as you swing your hands through an arc,
keeping your elbows close to your body. Release the ball with a flick of the
wrists and fingers. Follow through with your fingers pointing to the target.

Kicking - Use a kicking tee to hold the ball. Swing through the

strike zone, making contact with the instep of your foot. Make sure
you follow through with your toes pointing in the direction of the
ball, bringing your leg up high.

Tackling -

Hit the ball carrier right above the hip with your head
on the outside of the body. Lock your shoulders , grip, and drive with your
legs.

Evasion -

The dummy pass is a great weapon of distraction. The ball

carrier will fake a pass to either side but will tuck the ball in under the arm.
Now the ball carrier will run into the space that was created.
