Hypothesis
Testing

For the previous sessions we have been testing on only one

sample. Today we will be testing on two samples (equality of
variance, mean, proportion etc.)

Where do we use this in real life?

When we are comparing the production time of two machine.
We are comparing two sets of experimental groups.
When we compare the arrivals of customers in two different
locations of Jollibee.

GUIDED EXERCISE 3.1

Two set-ups of workers are being studied. The controlled set-up
with 42 workers have a mean task finish time of 3.5 minutes
and a standard deviation of 0.3 minutes. The supposed
improved set-up with 60 workers have a mean task finish time
of 3.35 minutes and a standard deviation of 0.1 minutes. Test
the hypothesis that the supposed improved set-up really
reduced mean task finish time using a significance level of =
0.05. Compute for the P-value

Hypothesis

1. The difference of the mean task time of the two samples
2. Ho: 1 2 = 0 or 1 = 2
3. H1: 1 2 > 0 or 1 > 2

8. Since 3.12 > 1.64., at alpha = 5% we reject the null hypothesis thus
concluding that there is a significant decrease in task time for the
improved set-up

minutes and a standard deviation of 0.3 minutes. The
supposed improved set-up with 60 workers have a mean task
finish time of 3.35 minutes and a standard deviation of 0.1
minutes. Suppose the true reduction in time is 0.24 minutes
and we want to detect this with probability at least 0.90 at a
significance level of = 0.05. What is the required sample
size?
n = 15

GUIDED EXERCISE 3.3

Two fabricating machines are being tested. Twelve
manufactured products from the first machine and fifteen
manufactured products from the second machine are
measured. The sample mean and variance for the first machine
is 30.5 and 2.02 and for the second machine is 32.6 and 0.98
respectively. Test the hypothesis that the two means are
different at a significance level of = 0.05 assuming normally
distributed populations whose population variances are not
equal.

GUIDED EXERCISE 3.4

Two filling machines are being tested. Sixteen manufactured
products from each machine are weighed. The sample mean
and variance for the first machine is 101.15 and 6.24 and for
the second machine is 100.36 and 5.76 respectively. Test the
hypothesis that the two means are different at a significance
level of = 0.05 assuming normally distributed populations
whose population variances are equal.
