Badarpur Thermal Power

Station

Overview of
BTPS

BTPS MEETS MORE THAN 24% OF DELHIS ELECTRICITY

CONSUMPTION
INSTALLED CAPACITY 720 MW
DERATED CAPACITY 705 MW (3x95 + 2x210MW)
OWNED BY GOVT. OF INDIA, MINISTRY OF POWER
BEING MANAGED BY NTPC FOR THE LAST 26 YEARS SINCE
1st APRIL 1978
NTPC adjudged as the 3rd best employer in India

Parts of a
Thermal Plant
There are basically three main units of a thermal
power plant:
1. Steam Generator or Boiler
2. Steam Turbine
3. Electric Generator

Coal Handling
The coal handling plant consists of two plants:
Old Coal Handling Plant (OCHP)
New Coal Handling Plant (NCHP)

The OCHP supplies coal to Unit- I, II, III &

NCHP supplies coal to Unit- IV and V.
COAL SUPPLIED AT BTPS
Coal is supplied to BTPS by Jharia coal mines.

Switch Gear
Switchgear is one that makes or breaks the electrical
circuit.
It is a switching device that opens & closes a circuit that
defined as apparatus used for switching, Lon rolling &
protecting the electrical circuit & equipment.
The switchgear equipment is essentially concerned with
switching & interrupting currents either under normal or
abnormal operating conditions.
In order to interrupt heavy fault currents, automatic
circuit breakers are used.

Generators
Turbo generator 100MW
TURBO GENERATOR 210 MW
The 100 MW generator generates 10.75 KV and 210 MW
generates 15.75 KV. The voltage is stepped up to 220 KV with
the help of generator transformer and is connected to the grid.
The voltage is stepped down to 6.6 KV with the help of UNIT
AUXILLARY TRANSFORMER (UAT) and this voltage is
used to drive the HT motors. The voltage is further stepped
down to 415 V and then to 220 V and this voltage is used to
drive Lt Motors.

Control and
This
control & instrumentation is the brain of the plant
Instrumentation
because from the relays to transmitters followed by the
electronic computation chipsets and recorders and
lastly the controlling circuitry, all fall under this

In C&I Lab parameters to be monitored are:

1. Speed
2. Temperature
3. Current
4. Voltage
5. Pressure
6. Flow of Gases
7. Vibration

C&I Labs
Control and Instrumentation Department has following
labs:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Manometry Lab
Protection and Interlocks Lab
Electronics Lab
Water Treatment Plant
Furnaces Safety Supervisory System Lab

Automation Lab
This

lab deals in automating the existing equipment and feeding

routes.

Earlier,

the old technology dealt with only (DAS) Data

Acquisition System known as primary systems.

The

modern technology or the secondary systems are coupled

with (MIS) Management Information System.

All

the control instruments are excited by 24V supply (4-20mA)

because voltage can be mathematically handled with ease
therefore all control systems use voltage system for
computation.
