friendshipsandthelatesttechnology.Surprisinglythereport
alsosaysthatteensaremoreinterestedinhighpayingjobs
thanadults.Whenyouaddthesemodernappetitestothe
timelessphysicalattractionteenagershaveforoneanother,
itsclearthatyouthfullustsarenotchildsplay.

SexualPleasureGodmadesextobeapleasurable
expressionoflovebetweenahusbandandhiswife.
Whenourpassionspushustosatisfyourappetites
outsideofmarriage,Godsbeautiful,productiveprocess
becomesdestructivetoallinvolved.
EscapingRealityInaworldfullofstress,anger,hurt,
andfear,drugsandalcoholappeartobeaquickfix.
Whenspiritualrejuvenationthroughprayer,worship,
andmeditationontheWordareignored,thebodyseeks
anescapeevenifitisartificialandtemporary.

LustoftheEye
NewThingsDevelopingatasteforthelatest
productmodelsandversionscanleadyouonan
unendingsearchforsatisfaction.Thisinsatiable
appetitefornewthingsleavesyoudiscontentwith
theblessingsofGod.SomeoneElsesThingsAn
internalpressuretokeepupwiththematerial
possessionsofyourfriends,classmates,and
coworkerscanquicklybecomeenvyorcovetousness.
PassionatePurity:
EntertainmentMediaWiththeconstantprogression
oftechnologyinmedia,oursocietyisoverwhelmedwith
nonstopvisualstimulation.Shrinkingattentionspans
demandvisualgratification,andlittletimeisgivento
personalprayer,Biblestudy,andothernecessities.
PornographyAmongthemostaddictiveanddamaging
lustsoftheeye,pornographydeceivestheviewerinto
believingitisnotreal.Christiansendeavoringtoremain
physicallypurefallpreytothislieandfindtheirmindsand
heartsdesensitizedanddirty.
PassionatePurity:
Pride of Life
Academic Prestige Schooling and higher education is
profoundly important, but when it becomes the primary
benchmark of success, then majors, college choices,
and even grades can become a source of ungodly pride.
Career and Income Advancement Working for a living
is a part of life. Living for work, however, indicates a
priority problem. All too often, Christians will uproot
families, leave town, and leave behind ministries to
pursue promotions, titles, or higher salaries. When these
decisions are made with no input from God or godly
leaders, pride takes over.

RecognitionandPopularityPraisingsomeonefora
goodjobisalwaysappropriate.Itsonlywhenwe
getoverlooked,rejected,orwhensomeoneelsegets
thecreditthatourtruemotivesarerevealed.
Rejectionandungratefulnessishurtful,butifitonly
hurtsourpride,itmaybetheworkofGod.
Remember,PauldidnotinstructTimothytostruggle
orfightwithhisworldlypassions.Hetoldhimto

TheLyingHeart
Haveyoueverapproachedaforkintheroadandwere
notsurewhichwaytogo?Whenpeopleseekadvice
onadifficultdecision,manytimesafriendwilloffer
theoldclich:justfollowyourheart.Atonetimeor
another,wehaveallsaidsomethinglike,inmyheart,
Iknewitwasright.Unfortunatelyfortheheart
followers,thewordsoftheprophetJeremiahofferan
alarmingrevelation.

Theheartisdeceitfulaboveallthings,and
desperatelywicked:whocanknowit?
(Jeremiah17:9).

Inartandliteraturetheheartisconsideredthe
seatofhumanemotionandwithoutadoubt,
emotionplaysasignificantroleinoureveryday
lives.Sadness,happiness,surprise,andanger,
tonameafew,canradicallychangeourplans.
Emotionscanchangeourdesiretogotoschool,
totalktofriends,toshowupforwork,andeven
togotochurch.

Animpureheartallowsemotiontorununchecked.
Emotionsarereal,buttheyareunbelievablyshort
lived.Thatiswhycommonwisdomsuggeststhatan
angrypersoncounttotenbeforespeakingandthat
aneagerbusinessmansleeponitbeforesigninga
contract.HowmuchthemoreshouldChristiansignore
theemotionalliesoftheheartwhenmakingdecisions
thatcanchangethecourseoftheireternallives?

Whenitfeelslikeemotionsareinterferingwithyour
prayerlife,yourfellowship,yourchurchattendance,
yourworship,oryourworkinministry,justremember
thatyourheartandemotionsaredeceitful.Sowith
suchanunpredictableheartandtemporaryemotions,
howcanyougaincontrol?Whoknowsyourheart?

betweenChristiansintheBookofActs.

TheHolyGhostandFaithPurifytheHeart
AndGod,whichknoweththehearts,barethem
witness,givingthemtheHolyGhost,evenashedid
untous;Andputnodifferencebetweenusand

BecauseoftheirpassionateallegiancetoMoseslaw,
devoutJewishChristianshadrejectedthesalvationof

Casting down imaginations, and every
high thing that exalteth itself against the
knowledge of God, and bringing into
captivity every thought to the obedience

heart,soitwouldstandtoreasonthatwhentheWord
ofGodandworshipbecomeourpassion,ourthoughts
willalignwithGods.Nevertheless,Satantriesto
invadeourmindswithanewdistractioneveryday.
Itsimportanttopointout,though,thatSatans
temptationdoesnotautomaticallybecomeoursin.
TheEpistleofJamesexplainsitthisway:

Buteverymanistempted,whenheis
drawnawayofhisownlust,andenticed.
Thenwhenlusthathconceived,it
bringethforthsin:andsin,whenitis

Thedevilwouldlikeustobelievethatwehaveinstantly
sinnedwhenhehastemptedus,butaccordingtoJames,
temptationhastoconnectwithourlust,andtogethertheymust
conceivesin.InJameswriting,thewordconceivemeansto
seizeortakeandindulge.Youwillbetemptedtotransgress
GodsWordeverydayofyourlife.Satantemptsuswith
thingsthatinthepasthavebeenapassionofours.Whenwe
dwellonthattemptation,makingitourownthought,itleads
tosin.Whenthatthoughtmovesfromyourmindintoyour
heart,embracingyourlust,sinisimminent.Onceyoutake
actiontosatisfyorindulgealustfulthought,youhavesinned.

Inthismediasaturatedculture,itisimpossibletoeliminate
everyexternalthoughtortemptationwithwhichtheenemy
triestoattackus,butwecanpreventthemfromdwellingin
ourminds.Itisironic,however,thatwhenprotectingthe
mind,thoughtsalonewillnotgetthejobdone.InII
Corinthians10:5,Paulmakesitveryclearthatsubmittingour
mindsrequiresanactive,ifnotviolent,effortonourpart!Just
liketheoldgardener,wemustignorethefluttering
imaginationsthatSatansendstodistractusandfocusour
attentionongodlytasks.

Hereareafewgodlytasksthatwilloccupyyourmind:
ShareatestimonyofwhatGodrecentlydidforyouwithanunsaved
friend.
Walktoclassoreatlunchwithaclassmatewhodoesnthavemany
friends.
Carrythechurchprayerlistinyourwalletorpurse,andpraysincerely
foradifferentpersonsneedeachtimeyoublessyourfood.
Carryasmallcardinyourwalletorpursethathasyourtwofavorite
Bibleversesfromthislessononit.Whentemptationcomes,pullout
yourcardandreadtheversesaloud.
PassionatePurity:
Despite our active Christian lives, sometimes
distractions and temptations penetrate our minds
and settle into our thoughts. When this happens,
Paul instructed us to aggressively cast them
down and hold them captive. This must be done
immediately, before these thoughts build a
permanent nest!

Busted Imaginations and lockedup Thoughts
Here are a few practical ways to subdue ungodly
thoughts:
Write down the people, places, and things that
trigger those thoughts. Do everything in your
power to avoid them.
For those people, places, and things that are
impossible to avoid, add a layer of accountability.

Forexample:
1)Onlyfellowshipwithyourproblempeopleinthe
presenceofaspirituallystrongfriendoradult.
2)Onlyvisityourproblemplacesattherighttime
withtherightperson.
3)Forthingslikecellphonesandcomputersthatare

foolproofblocksandfiltersforyou.

If these steps were easy, it would not

be called submitting. Sometimes
making a pact with your friends to take
these steps together makes it easier,
but only do this with the supervision of
a godly adult.
PassionatePurity:
Cleanse Your Mind
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship one with another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from
all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we
deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If
we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness (I John 1:7-9).

baptizedinthenameofJesus,andyouhavebeen

Still, John did not leave us hanging in the
hopeless snare of sin. He goes on to teach that
through sincere confession and Christs blood,
we can be cleansed from all unrighteousness
including that of the mind.

WhilewehavethepromiseofChristscleansing
power,itisimpossibletoignorethatitisa
conditionalpromise.AccordingtoJohn,believers
canonlyclaimthispromiseifwewalkinthelight!
Earlierinthesamechapter,JohnrecordedthatGod
islightinwhichwemustwalk:

This then is the message which we have heard

of him, and declare unto you, that God is light,
and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we
have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness,
we lie, and do not the truth (I John 1:56).

For those hoping to live life their way, walking a dark
path of pleasure and sin, yet claiming the benefits of the
blood, verse six should be a real eye-opener. Yes, the
blood can cleanse us of an impure mind, but the blood is
only accessible in the light, and the light is the truth of
Gods Word. So if believers are to maintain a clean
mind, it only happens as we walk or strive to live in
obedience with Gods Word. Just as obedience to Gods
Word in baptism first introduced us to the cleansing
power of the blood, obedience to His Word after baptism
ensures our connection to the blood.

Fortheythatareafterthefleshdomindthethingsof
theflesh;buttheythatareaftertheSpiritthethingsof
theSpirit.Fortobecarnallymindedisdeath;buttobe
spirituallymindedislifeandpeace(Romans8:56).
Ifweweretotallyupthenumberofhoursinaweekthat
ourmindsareengagedinspiritualthingscomparedto
thetimewespendonearthlythingslikeentertainment,
weallmightbeinforasurprise.

*Sleepingandeatingare,ofcourse,neededtolivea
healthylife.Nevertheless,bothdomeetphysical
ratherthanspiritualneeds,andwhendoneinexcess,
canharmbothbodyandsoul.Considerthemonlyin
comparisontothetimeyouspendtendingtospiritual
needs.
PassionatePurity:
School,jobs,andrecreationareallimportantpartsofour
busylives.Somescheduledemandsareunavoidable,but
otherswepassivelyallowtodominateourlives,leaving
littletimefortheHolySpirittoministertoourminds.That
iswhywehavetoplanthetime,makethetime,andprotect
thetimeforspiritualthings.Considerthefollowingstepsto
increasethetimeyourmindspendsonspiritualthoughts:

LetPositiveThoughtsDominate
Finally,brethren,whatsoeverthingsaretrue,
whatsoeverthingsarehonest,whatsoeverthingsare
just,whatsoeverthingsarepure,whatsoeverthings
arelovely,whatsoeverthingsareofgoodreport;if
therebeanyvirtue,andiftherebeanypraise,think
onthesethings(Philippians4:8).
PassionatePurity:
It is difficult to have a pure mind when lies, gossip,
negative news stories, hateful arguments, and ugly
attacks dominate our senses. Paul was not just saying
think happy thoughts! He was telling us to play an
active role in tuning out lies and liars. Walk away from
gossips. Turn off the so-called hard news and the
ridiculous celebrity news. If a negative person will not let
you encourage them, walk away before they drag you
down. If you can filter, reduce, or eliminate the number
of carnal, impure thoughts that invade your ears and
mind, you increase the Holy Spirits chance to cleanse
your mind!
PassionatePurity:
Renew the Mind
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind
(Ephesians 4:2 3).
Your mind is not just a three-pound mass of
nerves and memories. Paul said it is a spiritual
zone. In fact we can safely call it a spiritual
warzone complete with land- mines, ambushes,
hand-to-hand combat, air assaults, and
casualties.

Remember,castingdownimaginationsandholdingyour
thoughtscaptivecantakealotoutofyou!Pursuingthelight
ofGodsWordandsquirrelingawayeverysparemomentto
cleanseyourmindcanleaveyouexhausted!Youarea
spiritualwarriorandyourmindisthebattlefield.Sometimes
weforgetthateventhewinningsoldieriswearyaftera
battle,andnomatterwhowins,thebattlefieldisalways
wornandscarredfromthefight.Inotherwords,youmust
renewyourmindintheSpirit!
PassionatePurity:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye

transformed by the renewing of your mind, that
ye may prove that is that good, and acceptable,
and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2).
PassionatePurity:
Planning and prioritizing godly fellowship, Bible
reading, and prayer regiments is important, but
there are some battle scars that only a stop at the
Holy Ghost hospital can heal. Many prayer
warriors and spiritually gifted saints will testify
that some of their worst attacks from Satan came
after a mighty spiritual victory. It is imperative that
your strained, burdened, and war-ravaged mind
be renewed in the Holy Ghost!

InJoshuachapter6,wereadofthedecisivevictory
IsraelwonovermightyJericho,athriving
metropoliswiththousandsofcitizensand
impenetrablewalls.Onlyonechapterlater,Israel
takesonthetinytownofAiwithasurprising
outcome:

And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him,
Let not all the people go up; but let about two or
three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and
make not all the people to labour thither; for they
are but few. So there went up thither of the
people about three thousand men: and they fled
before the men of Ai (Joshua 7:3-4).
PassionatePurity:
In the afterglow of a God-given victory, Israel was defeated by a
far weaker foe. They were so confident in their superiority over
Ai that they decided to fight with less than all their resources. But
that wasnt the real reason for their loss. The Bible tells us that
one man disobeyed God and took treasure from Jericho after
the dust settled from the battle. Achan may have been caught up
in the rush of victory. He probably felt like he deserved some of
the spoil for all his effort. When he lowered his guard and
relaxed his respect for Gods command, the Bible says he
brought the accursed thing or impurity into his life and brought
defeat to Israel.

RestintheHolyGhostNottheFlesh
Forwithstammeringlipsandanothertonguewill
hespeaktothispeople.Towhomhesaid,Thisis
therestwherewithyemaycausethewearytorest;
andthisistherefreshing:yettheywouldnothear
(Isaiah28:1142).
PassionatePurity:
Isaiahs reference to stammering lips and another
tongue was a specific prophecy about the
outpouring of the Holy Ghost. While the Holy
Ghost saves, sanctifies, and seals us, we must
also understand that it is our rest. When you are
tired or stressed out, there is no better time to
surrender to the Holy Ghost. Allow the Holy Spirit
to renew and refresh you when you are weary.
PassionatePurity:
Not by works of righteousness which we have
done, but according to his mercy he saved us,
by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of
the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5).
PassionatePurity:
When your mind is battle-worn and drained of
spiritual strength, the Holy Ghost will comfort
you, strengthen you, and renew you! However,
Holy Ghost renewal should not only be sought
during times of severe stress, nor should we
wait for annual conferences or retreats. Paul
said we must be renewed daily:

If we do not strive to renew our minds, Paul said

in Romans 12:2 that we will eventually be
conformed to this world.

Like David, we must employ prayer, repentance,
and worship in our pursuit of Gods pure heart;
but unlike David, our search for purity is enabled
by the Holy Spirit. In other words, without the
Holy Ghost David could only chase purity. Since
we are filled with the Spirit, we can claim a pure
heart every day!

Finally, just as a pure heart can only be found in
God, the same is true of a pure mind. Paul
wrote in Philippians 2:5:
Let this mind be in you, which was also in
Christ Jesus.

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he
may instruct him? But we have the mind of
Christ.
By studying Gods Word, you can have the mind
of Christ. By praying in the Spirit, you can have
the mind of Christ. By hearing a preacher or
teacher of the gospel you can have the mind of
Christ. A pure heart and mind can be yours!
