FORECASTING & CAPACITY DETERMINATION

Development of Surrounding Area
The information is collected from planning authorities and agencies in order to obtain plans of

existing and future land use.

A disturbance by the activity of airport on the residential area and school, should be as less

as possible.
The study of prospective land uses is essential to avoid the future conflicts.

Availability of land for expansion

Availability of suitable land for the future expansion of an airport is necessary.

Forecasting air traffic & increase in the number of passengers

Forecast of air traffic & increase in the number of flights in the coming years.

Cycle time: Average time between completions of

successive units.
Bottleneck: Factor that limits production. Slowest
operating component in the production line.
Capacity: Measure of output per unit time when fully
busy. (typically measured as reciprocal of cycle time)
Capacity utilization: Measure of how much output is
achieved with respect to the total capacity available.
Throughput time: Time taken to complete a process
from arrival to exit. Sum of critical path operations
plus waiting time in queue.

COMMUNICATION-FACILITY
TOOLS
COMMUNICATION-FACILITY TOOLS
Process of transferring information from one source to another
Ground to Ground : Communication among stations on the ground(Aeronautical

fixed telecomm network is used)

Ground to Air : Between pilot & the air traffic controller (HF or VHF is used)
Air to Air : Between the pilots of two aircrafts in the air
Airline and station messaging.
Establish procedures via SITA, e-mail, fax, phone and radio.

Regulatory agency reporting.

APIS.

NAVIGATION FACILITY
TOOLS
CDI : Course Deviation Indicator
ILS : Instrument Landing System
ATC : Air Traffic Control
NDB : Non Directional Beacon(Radio)
DVOR : Directional VHF omni-range
DME : Distance Measurement
Equipment

SURVEILLANCE
Monitoring from a distance , by means of equipment

installed at each airport , the movement of all the

aircrafts within its region of operation.

Primary & secondary radars are used to aid

surveillance in civil as well as military aviation

Surface Movement Radar is used to monitor the

movement of the aircraft on runways or taxiways

RUNWAY
RUNWAY CONFIGURATIONS
CONFIGURATIONS

Many runway configurations exist

Most are combinations of these basic configurations:
Single runway
Parallel Runways
Two parallel runways
Two parallel runways with staggered thresholds
Four parallel runways
Intersecting runways
Open-V Runways

TYPES OF
RUNWAY
LAYOUTS
Single Runway Airport

Kai Tak International

Airport

This is the simplest of the

runway configurations.

Suitable when winds

predominantly blow along the
runway and the peak hour air
traffic demand is less than 50
operations.

When winds are light both ends

can be used for both arrivals
and departures.

When winds are strong only one

end can be used for operations.

INTERSECTING
RUNWAY AIRPORT

It becomes necessary
to use this configuration
when winds are blowing
in more than one
direction.
When the winds are
light both runways
can be used.
When the winds are
strong only one
runway can be
used.

FACILITY
FACILITY DESIGN
DESIGN FACTORS
FACTORS
Flexibility: Design should be dynamic to allow for future growth and

changes in services.

Security: Airport design of today needs to consider space for

passenger and luggage screening.

Aesthetics: Service providers delivering essentially same service

could be perceived different because of aesthetics
