INTRODUCTION
What is machining?

Process of removing unwanted material

from a workpiece.
Where do we apply machining?

On materials with ductile characteristic.

What do we do if the
material is not

Heat Assisted
Machining

Metals tend to deform easily when heat is

applied
Metal is heated to a certain
temperature, ease the cutting process

Principle of Heat Assisted Machining :-

1.Increase the difference in hardness of

cutting tool and workpiece
2.Reducing component forces
3.Improve surface finish
4.Prolonging tools life

LASER ASSISTED
MACHINING

Laser Assisted
Machining (LAM)

Process of preheating a workpiece

ahead of the location of the cutting
with a focused laser beam

This will lower the strength of the

material in the cutting area at a
specific elevated temperature

Laser Assisted
Machining (LAM)
Advantages:

ability to focus the heat

large power intensity

strong shaping capability

ease of automation with in process sensing.

Benefits of LAM
1. Reduction of cutting
forces

On Iconel 718 and Ti-6Al-4V by

Komenduri et al. the result shown a
reduction in cutting forces by 46% .
A decrease of 70% cutting forces for LAM
of AISI 1043 steel was recorded by
Gratias et al.

Benefits of LAM
2. Better surface finish

in machining ceramic hotpressed

silicon nitride, surface roughness of 0.5
m was obtained

LAM of AISI 4130 steel with Rockwell

hardness C of 50 obtained surface finish
Ra lower than 0.3 m

Benefits of LAM
3. Prolonging tool life

In Waspaloy super alloy machining, ,

temperature was increased to 300 C and a
reduction of 60% flank wear resulting in less
than 0.2 mm compared to conventional
machining of over 0.5 mm .

INDUCTION
ASSISTED
MACHINING

Process Control Parameter (VMC)

Induction Hot Machining

Equipments

Induction heaters.
Induction coil is use as the heat source
to induce a high frequency alternating
current (AC) into the work material to be
heated.
No contact.
The coil (induction coil) acting as the
primary transformer.
Work material is used as the secondary
transformer.

Induce an equal and opposing current in

the workpiece
Heating will take place due to the
resistance to the flow of the induced
high-frequency alternating electric
current

Heating Rate Parameter

Frequency
Specific heat of the material
Resistance of the material to the flow of
current
Magnetic permeability of the material
Intensity of the induced current

Portable transistor induction heating

machine

1. High frequency transformer

2. Matching box
3. Cooling unit

Benefits of Induction Heat-Assisted End Milling

Requiring low heating temperature

Reduction in magnitude of acceleration
amplitudes
Reduction in surface roughness
Reduction in tool wear

CONCLUSION

Conclusion

With heat assisted machining, Hard

metals and alloys are able to be
machined with:

A significant decrease in cutting forces

Thus prolonging the tools life
Better surface finish compared to
conventional machining processes
